(7,263 posts)Looking back, Bill C. did do a lot of good.
Some not so good.
And made a lot of really dumb decisions.
But overall I think he tried to leave the world a less hurtful place then when he took office.
So Happy Birthday, Mr. President.

(27,813 posts)When he was in office was when I went from being poor to middle class. And, I loved his joie de vivre. Times were good and people were happy.
He also appointed the best Supreme Court Justice of all time and had superior taste in his spouse.
Happy Birthday, Big Dog!
I was too young (and clumsy) to benefit personally.
But my dad went from a dead-end assistant professor post in a podunk U, full of Jim Crow types that detested him - to a well-paying engineering job in Orange County, CA - where he was able to build equity, a nest egg, and a great reputation in his field.
There isn't a doubt in mind that none of that would've happened had it not been for the Clinton administration.
Elections, as we've both learned first hand, have consequences.

(5,499 posts)I was 22. I saw AL Gore and him speak several times that late summer and fall.
Bill was great with people. And exceptionally smart. I think early in his presidency he made some mistakes that opened the door to the contract with America movement.
I don't think he was ready for the speed of Washington and national politics. But once he figured it out, he became very effective.
I still think AL Gore made a huge mistake by not running on the Clinton record and by not letting Bill campaign for him.

(21,639 posts)Gore let the Shrub frame the agenda that year: that it was actually about "who'd you'd rather have a beer with."
And then people wonder why so many people fall for scams and con-men.

(21,639 posts)I was in high school in a largely Republican town in the Deep South (not too deep red - but still).
Everyone knew I supported Clinton (one of the few white people there who did). You could cut the air with the tension and bad vibes that Wednesday.
Our science teacher was married to the local U.S. Attorney (a Bushie, of course). She walked in, a minute late and sniffing, and just said "will everyone turn to page 356 (sniff)."
Well, the town - which had been stagnant since the early '80s - did really well under Clinton. And I'm happy for them.
Even if, I later found out, I had two hexes put on me around that time in "retaliation."
Oh, well.

(27,813 posts)A guy from WashPirg (People's Interest Research Group) had come by earlier and I gave him a donation. My sister called me when Michigan pushed Clinton over the top and I started jumping up and down in the living room.
Suddenly, a knock on the door! It was the WahPirg guy! He saw me jumping up and down and figured it was good news. I gave him a beer and he and my sister (on the phone) and I celebrated. Never learned his name, never saw him again, but I hope he remembers it, too.
