9. I think it happened slightly differently....

Michael J Fox's character had taken the DeLorean into the future. The elderly Biff Tannen character somehow realized what that Fox's character could time travel and stole the DeLorean and traveled back to the 1950's and gave his younger self the sports almanac from the future, and explained to his teenage self that he could use the Almanac to become rich by sports betting, and therefore changing the future self.
