"SNIP.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Weeks after saying Social Security and Medicare should be subjected to annual budget talks — a stance that caused political blow back from his foes — Johnson once again weighed into America’s signature social insurance program.”

“During a Wednesday campaign stop in Rice Lake, Johnson said Social Security ‘was set up improperly” and that the system’s funds would have been better off invested in the stock market.”

.....SNIP"

Everything is set up wrong so they want to dismantle it. But they never give an idea how or what they are replacing it with.

investors would lose out. I can't read the article but is this his attempt to walk back his previous SS statements cause he is now losing?

That's trillions of dollars chasing after the same equity value.
It would overprice everything, including struggling companies.
It's a monumentally stupid idea.

He is not wrong about it being set up improperly. There should be a fourth tier that taxes above the cap and returns a much smaller percentage. The system was set up to give everyone a minimum income at retirement that allows individuals to live with some level of dignity. The fact that the high income earners and investors don't also contribute to supporting the system is the crime.

When the economy and stock market weren’t doing so hot.

Investments aren’t guaranteed good investments or a gain on money. With Social Security, you have something to help you.

It's designed to be a solid, long term plan to help seniors when they retire, based on government securities, not speculative markets.

All those lazy geezers just sitting back, collecting checks and not doing anything for it is just too much for Sen. Ron to bear. These codgers need to learn that they can take a beating in the market and battle the cat for scraps. Then they'll appreciate the Republicans! Tell us, Sen. Johnson, what exactly did you do to contribute to the economy other than marrying rich?

SS tax receipts have outpaced payouts for decades. If you want to clear out the SS program make sure you pay those of us who've been overpaying their SS taxes since the 80s.

IMO, SS should be a pay as you go system. Raise the cap and lower the tax rate to the point it breaks even then keep it there. Politicians and the M$M just run with story that SS is bankrupt and never address the surplus that's been tapped into (stolen) for the better part of 30 or 40 years.
