More than 100 Bay Area school board candidates -- including some with extreme views -- running unoppos

More than 100 Bay Area school board candidates — including some with extreme views — running unopposed
At least 100 school board elections in the Bay Area have only one candidate, meaning the race will not appear on voters’ ballots due to cost-cutting measures, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The state policy of not including unopposed candidates on school board and special district ballots means that some candidates will win election without voters knowing who’s being elected. This potentially paves the way for candidates with extreme positions gaining seats on school boards without voters’ knowledge, the newspaper reported.

Among the candidates running unopposed in the Bay Area is Dennis Delisle, an accountant and business owner who opposes homosexuality, wrote that descendants of slaves “are so much better off” than if their ancestors had been left in Africa, and has said he believes the role of public schools is to teach young people about God.

Troy Flint, the spokesperson for the California School Boards Association, said it’s not a surprise that some candidates can get elected to school boards with little scrutiny.

“Given the huge time commitment if you do it well, given the amount of work involved, the amount of scrutiny and sometimes hostility school boards are experiencing, it’s not exactly an enticing position,” Flint told the Chronicle. “My fear is that if the position becomes less appealing, the only people who will run will have self-interested reasons for doing so.”

When word got out that a conservative candidate who opposes gay marriage and supports the presence of Christian principles in public schools was running unopposed for the Morgan Hill school board, phones across the city started ringing.

Because the incumbent wasn’t running for the seat, the deadline to find another candidate was extended five days — to Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Local officials and families started recruiting after The Chronicle highlighted the race in a story about the number of unopposed Bay Area school board candidates, said Claudia Rossi, a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Education.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rossi drove a retired school librarian, Terri Knutson, to the county offices to file her candidacy papers.

I guess it's the Bay Area? It seems a stretch. It's way down south by places like Watsonville and Gilroy. It has a lot more in common with the Central Valley than it does San Jose or Santa Cruz.

When I saw the headline, I was thinking some super right-winger was running in Marin or Alameda county or something and was about to WTF the situation. When I saw Morgan Hill, it was, "Oh, that tracks."

Even where I live, Solano County next to Napa, has a large rural component. I walk out my front door, walk a few hundred feet, and that's just farmland and vineyards. If you read demographics, you'll see we're a 2/3 blue county. But we have pockets. In 2020, my rep John Garamendi(D) won 55-45. When I go to the local farmer's market for vegetables (a five minute drive away), I see Trump billboards.

People see the blueness of California's cities and kind of make an assumption we're a super liberal state. On balance, we are where the population is very concentrated. Get away from the cities, and it's the same as any other rural area in America.

Even in the House of Representatives, it’s 32-8. So I think California will always have the reputation for being a deep blue state. I like it. Only 49 to go. Lol.

And if the newspaper (Carolyn Jones) is that concerned about who will be on the school boards then they should publish the names of all those running unopposed. So area citizens know who they are.
