Texans in the bottom 20 percent of income earners those earning less than $20,900 pay 13 percent of their income in state and local taxes, while those in the top 1 percent of income earners those earning $617,900 or more pay only 3.1 percent.
In California, the bottom 20 percent of income earners those earning less than $23,200 pay 10.5 percent in state and local taxes, while the top 20 percent those earning $714,400 or more pay 12.4 percent.
Texas was the second-most regressive tax state, behind only Washington. Low-income taxpayers bear a disproportionate share of the tax burden in those states, according to the nonprofit. California, meanwhile, is the most progressive tax state because people in higher tax brackets pay higher tax rates.
"Every state has some regressive taxes on the books," said Carl Davis, a research director at the nonprofit. "Whether that be sales tax, motor fuel tax, tobacco tax, even property tax is somewhat regressive."
However, unlike other states, Texas has no "progressive counterbalance," Davis said, because there is no state income tax.

(2,173 posts)Texas is probably like Georgia, where I lived for 12 years. Fees for everything from registration of cars, to garbage pick up, to school fees were high. But heh, they have guns everywhere

(4,298 posts)states with no state income taxes should be paying more into their own disaster coffers. Over the years the red, no income tax states have been getting an oversized share of Fed disaster funds from taxpayers in blue states and most of their neediest citizens get less of their relief. Just say'in.

But you can't pump your own gas because they want to keep more people employed for the state income tax. Also, property tax there...ouch. There is a reason why mobile homes are the choice there.
Nevada has a low tax base, but they probably get what they need off of sin taxes from the casino's...now I think about it, not a bad idea. Out of state residents pay by gambling via the casino's, and subsidize the residents.

(33,349 posts)If fuel is $1 per gallon and taxed at $0.10 per gallon, the seller grosses 90%. If it's $10 per gallon and taxed at $0.10 per gallon, the seller grosses 99%.
Fuel should be taxed as a percentage of the sale. That wouldn't encourage higher prices per gallon.
