(24,504 posts)Not turning Democratic, but at least Palin won/t be owning the libs in Congress.

(7,867 posts)Begich will almost assuredly be eliminated, so who actually goes on to Congress will depend on who his voters voted as their second choice.
It still quite possibly could be Palin, which is just proof to me that RCV ain't all it's cracked up to be.

(24,504 posts)Now the Ind. and Dem can assure no Paul Lepages get elected up here.. In your State, I think you have such a Republican inclination that the system will support Republican split politics....for awhile.

(7,867 posts)...very much might allow for Palin to win.
I think that the single greatest total of votes cast would prefer Begich to win; however, he almost assuredly will not. Instead, his votes will get eliminated, and it's quite likely that enough of his voters will have Palin as their second choice to give her the win. However, you can bet that almost all of Peltola's voters would have picked Begich over Palin, which would have put Begich over the top, and by a wider margin than Palin most likely will win by. This is why I say RCV ain't all that it's cracked up to be either. There are certainly very noticeable flaws inherent in it.

(22,656 posts)I hate to be the negative Nancy here but someone please explain the optimism. My understanding is that Begich's second choice votes will now be counted. What are the odds that Pailin won't get virtually all of them since she is also a Republican. Have I got this all wrong? Somebody help me out here. Because by my calculations over 35 percent of his voters need to have listed Peltola as their second choice for her to have a chance.

(51,557 posts)I don't think it is impossible for her to have gotten 35% of Begich voters listing her as their second choice. His dad Nick Begich Sr. was a Democratic US Rep in AK, who died in a 1972 plane crash, and was never found. He was on his way to a campaign event in a plane with Democratic Majority Leader Hale Boggs who was accompanying him to support him in a tight race against Republican Don Young. The visitor center at Portage Glacier, just outside of Anchorage, is named for them, the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center.
