(1,336 posts)....thanks, I guess, to always wearing a mask when out and about. But I did have an unusual and painful reaction the day after my second shot -- my knee blew up and I was unable to put any weight on it for about a week. Co-incidence? I think not, as I've heard similar stories, especially when I went for physiotherapy.
All the same, I'll continue to booster program for as long as it seems necessary, and I'll continue to mask up!

An example (an actual conversation from yesterday):
My sister: Chris doesn't feel well! He was going to go to the Bronx Zoo, but now he's taking a nap!
Me: OMG! I hope it's not--- (I can't even utter the word)
My sister: He took a test but it's negative. But this new variant can take like 5 days after symptoms start to show up as positive.

(102,283 posts)No eating out and haven't attended crowded events the past couple of years, but exposed to a lot of COVID-positive patients. My humility is intact because I mostly credit luck above and beyond the precautions I've taken. I've taken several rapid COVID tests the past couple of years--not really because of any symptoms but because I suspected exposure. Always negative.
That said, Very Very very early in the pandemic (early Feb, 2020) was my last mild upper respiratory infection, lasting only a day or so. It is theoretically possible that was COVID, given there is some evidence it was circulating earlier than believed in many areas across the US. But it was no more than a cold, so..?

Nasty.
Whole family spent Christmas with us and the whole family went home sick with the same symptoms. It was right before the daily reports and rising fear regarding Covid. I'd been tracking the virus for several weeks because the news surrounding it sounded different, more alarming.
Often wondered if we were one of the early birds. If so, my son came down with a second case last month. Same symptoms but he bounced back in 5 days. He was double-vaxxed.

(129 posts)Fully vaccinated. Used and still use masks (while everyone else thinks it's all over).
Stayed away from crowds or clusters of people. That also means we have not gone
to the movies and stayed out of restaurants. We have refused to invite anyone, including relatives who are
not fully vaccinated. When asked, my very conservative sister-in-law did not get the boosters because
had COVID so she has "plenty of immunities". This after her husband died on their bed after jogging. He had a strong
case of COVID but refused to go to the hospital or his doctor for treatment.
You would think she would be more cautious after finding my brother facing up with dead eyes open.
My wife wanted to invited her to a small get together. I said absolutely NOT if she still hasn't had her boosters.
My wife called her and started a conversation that led to her to ask my sister-in-law if she got the boosters.
She began to whine, well, noooo, whine whine. She was not invited.
Another couple we know (Democrats), who got COVID, said they didn't understand why they caught it. They even got
all the shots. But they ate indoors in restaurants. NO NO.
We can't afford to catch it. We both have heart and lung issues.

My class today ran over and the next professor to enter the room came over to me and said, "What is this, a hold-up?"
He had to explain he was asking about/making a joke about my mask.
I responded that I was just diagnosed with several immune deficiencies. If I hadn't been caught off guard (since it has been a long time since anyone commented on my mask), I would have just quoted the infection rate in our county and suggested he should be masking, too. You shouldn't need an excuse to take steps to protect yourself/

But I was really taken aback in a University which, until recently, had random mandatory testing, mandatory vaccination, mandatory mask wearing through most of last year, and still optional at the professor's determination.
It's been a long time since anyone, even in the general public, commented on my mask wearing.
ETA: On Rate My Professor 4 students commented on his sense of humor - 3 said it was the worst/bad jokes/has none. The 4th said hs had a good sense of humor. Overall, though, his rating is one of the better I've seeen 4.8/5. That matches with my sense that he just lacks a filter.

(24,412 posts)Had a good run of it until then. My wife came back from Europe almost literally the day they stopped the testing requirements and she said that somebody on the plane sitting near her mentioned they had Covid, so we're pretty sure that that's how she got it and spread it around- all except for my daughter, who was on the plane too. But it's just amazing how it just quickly spread around the house. First, my wife and I tested positive, then my stepkids pretty shortly thereafter. My daughter was the only one who somehow never got sick. We were all vaxxed and boosted, so our symptoms were pretty mild but it still sucked bad for a couple of days. Lots of people I know who never had it are suddenly getting it, so there's almost nobody I know left who hasn't. The reports of the current variant(s) being VERY transmissible seem pretty darn accurate. Looking to get another shot once the new formulation is ready in September(?)

I wear a mask in public always. I dont go to indoor restaurants, wash my hands frequently, especially when I come home, and when we have had big family get togethers (for instance, our granddaughters first birthday party), we all tested before we got together.
I was at a church meeting last Thursday where we were all masked. I put myself at the other end of a long conference table and there was no one around me. We got notification on Friday that a pastor who was in the meeting had tested positive for Covid. It may be his third time having Covid. Yes, he is fully vaccinated and boosted. (2,220 posts)Hubster and I have both had a couple nasty respiratory bugs but consistently tested negative. We are obsessive maskers, only go to restaurants or clubs when cases are less than 50 per 100,000.
I almost got caught in a superspreader event in the spring. Cases were low when this event, which was outdoors, was planned, but exploded the week of the event. Just my luck, good or bad, take your pick, I fractured my shoulder three days before the event so didnt attend. Ten percent of the attendees caught Covid, about fifty people. They were all vaccinated, since that was a requirement to attend, and everyone recovered without problems within a couple weeks.
Its a strange feeling to balance out whether getting Covid would have been worse than the fracture, subsequent surgery, and lengthy recovery.

Since Ive been laid up, son and GD came down Saturday and he left her with me while he golfed a bit. When she got home Saturday night she threw up everything shed eaten. (28,798 posts)There is a chance that in Oct2019, when I went to CA and ended up really sick for 9 whole days, I had COVID. But it wasn't a thing yet. It's known that it was in CA at that time, but we're never going to know if that's what I had. Probably more unlikely than not, however, that's my caveat.
My 37-year-old son lives with me, worked at a grocery all through the pandemic, and neither of us have had it. My 30-year-old son and his fiancee have never had it (she's been exposed more than once) to my knowledge.
My 46-year-old, his wife, and their 3 children have all had it (they live in CA). So have many if not most of the people I know, even those who are baffled as to how they got it.
I do know how you feel, I wonder why we haven't gotten it yet.

Both of our daughters have been fully vaccinated (3 or 4 shots) and neither has been infected. In fact, one daughter cared for her covid-infected husband (also fully vaccinated) and did not get infected.
Similarly, my five younger siblings & their spouses (all vaccinated) have thus far been covid infection free. All of us have been tested by PCR &/or rapid antigen tests. I attribute this good fortune to good immunity and good infection-control practices.
I am looking forward to the release of the new bivalent covid vaccines in the coming weeks.

(21,596 posts)Unfortunately, my kid got it when he went back to school in person. He was fully vaccinated & double masked, and so only had a mild case. He received the monoclonal antibody treatment, which was amazingly effective.
My son, partner & I are fully vaccinated & double boosted. We wear N95 masks in indoor public spaces and dont eat inside restaurants.

(1,495 posts)My husband (who was careless with wearing a mask) got Covid in January 2022. My sister's husband got Covid in April 2022, he said he wore a mask and was careful, but he might have had a weak moment and didn't tell us because he knew we'd be mad. The rest of us, despite living in a county in New York that has had high transmission during most of the pandemic, have managed to protect ourselves with well-fitted N95s. It's best to avoid getting infected with a novel virus as so many things are unknown.

i work with a lot of kids--a lot of kids have had it
i've always worn masks--the parents of kids i work with (90%) think it's okay their kids are not masked. they also think it's okay to send their kids to class when they are SICK! so that way their kids can give it to the other unmasked kids whose parents think it's fine their kid doesn't wear a mask!
it's a stupid, never ending cycle.
and i cannot require kids to mask up.

Got the vaccine, all the boosters, isolated when it first started and pretty much stayed there for a year.
Still tend to be reclusive.

(2,860 posts)We're both vaxxed and boosted. She works for a medical lab and swabs people for COVID. We have both been tested quite a few times and have never had it. It's not like we haven't taken any risks though. We're very fortunate to have not come down with COVID.

(27,813 posts)Granted, we are careful. He works in the medical profession and wears N95 (he is not in direct contact with patients). I work from home and am relatively isolated. We have gotten all of our shots and boosters as soon as possible.
We mask pretty well. I need to ride transit once in a while (in Seattle) and always mask. We both mask in elevators and in stores. We have both taken a few airline trips but mask in lines and on the plane except when eating. We rarely go out but distance and mask until we are seated separately from others.
We have been careful but not perfect. I think at this point, the best you can do is just mask and distance as much as possible.

(440 posts)Me, my husband and our two adult sons have not had it, and neither has my 94-year-old mom. Everybody's vaxxed to the max, and we are still masking and limiting social interaction.
I guess it helps to be something of a hermit!

Still and all, it wouldnt be a shock if I tested positive. Im pretty cute and Ive attracted all sorts of varmints in my 75 years.

(3,275 posts)Of course, I live alone and work remotely right now so I don't interact daily with as many people in person as before covid. My parents, step parents and brothers haven't had covid. My mom would have told me if any of my aunts and uncles had tested positive. I have a large but pretty close Irish family.

(10,849 posts)I have the luxury of being retired, but began substitute teaching last Feb. I was very strict about masking, but have gotten a little loose this summer on vacation. Have had 4 vaccines.
My nephew-in-law did not get it even though his vaxxed wife and 2 daughters were quite sick with it last December.

My daughter in law's preschool-kindergarten opens in a couple of weeks though, so fingers crossed. They require vaccinations and are extremely careful but random is random.

(4,552 posts)Been diagnosed with it, no.
Hubby and I lived like hermits initially. I did the shopping once every 7-10 days and in those days you washed all outside packaging with a bleach solution.
Even went thru the gloves phase. Wore mask and used hand gel constantly, even when it was 25 deg F outside with a strong wind blowing-this was prior to getting back into car after food shopping.
As facts clarified, we adjusted behavior to only masks and alcohol gel.
As soon as vac were available for our age (66+ for me, 72 for hubby), we got the jabs. Also got boosted twice.
If I HAVE had it, it was milder than a case of flu.

(36,745 posts)Asymptomatic cases have happened.
Ive had the 4 shots and I suspect I had it this last January. Recently was around a whole bunch who came down with it and I didnt. Thats now why I think I had it in January.

(4,395 posts)About two months ago I had to travel for a work event where two other people tested positive. I had flu-like symptoms when I got back but had four negative Covid tests.
So I'm semi-assuming I've had it but may not have.

(13,496 posts)Though I should have gotten it. My daughter and husband had it. When she was positive, I decided Id go down with her. She slept in bed with me every night and hung out with me during the day, as I worked at home. My husband didnt want to miss work, as it was the final week with his students. So he slept in a different room and isolated from us.
Lo and behold, he ended up getting it days later. I never tested positive. (And I took two PCR tests and daily rapid tests.). I did get boosted not long before, so that may have afforded me extra protection. But my child literally slept in bed with me and spent 24/7 with me, unmasked. So either I am super immune or it was a fluke and Ill get it soon. (They both had it and recovered in May.).

(4,369 posts)(unless it was non-symptomatic). Never have felt the need to be tested...
but I have masked since near the beginning, still do, and fully vaccinated and boosted,
still practicing social distancing as much as possible (no inside venues more crowded than the grocery store, and the one I use is rarely crowded)
