Were you masked all the time in public? Did you attend a family event? Were you vaccinated?
I've always assumed you needed to be in the presence of an infected person for some countable amount of time. Back during delta it was within 6 feet for 10 or 15 minutes. But I heard no more about that after "the more transmissable" Omicron appeared.

(2,529 posts)She was sick but tested negative for COVID twice. Did our level best to avoid prolonged contact; however, my wife and I tested positive a week later. My uncle, despite his close proximity, never tested positive or showed signs.
I was down and out for 36 hours. My wife was d/o for 48. Neither have long lasting effects.
Ironically, my son, who refuses to get vaccinated, has never gotten COVID. My daughter and her fiance, both vaxxed/boosted, are just getting over COVID.

(34,073 posts)My spouse is incapable of keeping a mask on her face.
We were on diving vacation. Since she doesn't dive, she spent a lot of time indoors unmasked with the first wave of infections. She came down with it mid-week. Although she tested negative at the time, that's when her symptoms began. I had a scratchy throat 2 days later.
Ordinarily, when she has been in circumstances which make it likely for her to catch it, I mask within the home and sleep on the recliner in the living room with an air purifier going. Since we were sharing a single, relatively small room, it was impossible to take my normal precautions.

(11,468 posts)and boosted, caught it from this lady next table over on ferry who was coughing. I never caught it and think its because as I was walking to table heard her and left to go check on dog. When I came back he was still there by them 20 min later.
And as soon as his symptoms started few days later I made him quarantine from me even though first test was negative and next day positive and symptoms worse. I did it because I didn't want to catch even a cold because I was going to visit a new baby a week later which I ended up canceling because of his covid.
Hubby was not masked because he was sitting in dining area and had crappy attitude.
He was getting cocky thinking after all these years he was not going to get it wearing his mask less and less. Like we would go in a store and he wouldn't wear one but I would.
Now that he is finally over it after being very sick for 2 weeks and slightly sick the 3rd week, he is wearing a mask a new better fitting one with filter everywhere he goes. Lesson learned the hard way. He was scared he was going to die.

(11,023 posts)I suspect she got it in her office. We both mask regularly, but she also has to do a lot of phone/video work and probably wasn't masked during that.
The only other option would be from when she went out for pizza with a couple friends who are also very safe.
Wife went out with the two on Sunday, then was in the office Monday-Weds. She came down w/ symptoms on the next Sunday, while we had those two friends over again. The rest of us tested positive on Tuesday, which makes me suspect my wife's office was the culprit.
Everyone was vaxxed and boosted, but I was the only one who was double boosted and didn't experience bad symptoms. I was also the only one who got a paxlovid rebound as well...

(4,112 posts)Double vaxxed and double boosted. Pretty consistent about wearing masks in public. Some dude decided to use the treadmill right next to me and was coughing his head off. Let's not talk about the fact that there were about 20 other treadmills available, all of which were at a much greater distance. I did move, but apparently not quickly enough. I tested positive about 5 days later. I had mild symptoms which were further mitigated by taking Paxlovid. Only one day of awful fatigue (day 2), but I've recovered fully since.

(11,468 posts)when a lady sneezed near me, way before covid so no masks. I moved from her as fast as I could but the germs move faster! Few days later I got one of the worst flus in my life! and I had a flu shot that year but they don't always get the one you are around.

(5,067 posts)When out in public I wear a mask and have both shots and both booster shots. At the beginning of the month I picked up my mentally challenged son for a 4 day visit home. He was fine and I was fine. I took him back at the end of the 4 days. Two days later I just felt wishy washy and laid around all day doing nothing. The next day, I woke with a runny nose and running a temp. I tested and it was positive. I called his cottage and told his caregivers to test him. It too was positive but he never even sneezed. Nothing, nil, zilch. For five days I ran a fever, my nose ran constantly but I could not breathe through it. I sounded like a gravel pit when I talked, I had chills one minute and sweat the next. Then I had the running scoots. I had no appetite and nothing tasted right. In 5 days I ate 2 protein shakes, 2 cans of soup and half a sandwich. I no longer am sick but my get up and go got up and went. I have no energy to speak of and fall asleep if I sit down. Just getting a shower and getting dressed in the morning wears me out to the place I need a nap. I am told that is normal after a bout of covid.
When I called and reported to Mike's cottage that I had tested positive, I was informed that half his cottage was in quarantine so I am almost positive I got it from him even though he never had symptoms. I don't wear a mask around the house and he kissed me goodnight every night when he was home.
Beautiful Disaster
(667 posts)I wore a mask at all times indoors. I went with friends for four days. I got back Monday night and by Wednesday, I was testing positive. I assume Vegas, though that would have been a quick positive after exposure. Oddly, I was the only person to catch it despite sharing a room with this girl and driving there and back with friends.

(9,073 posts)My partner had dinner with a small group of friends. Apparently one of them wasn't feeling well but didn't tell anyone. A couple days later, partner didn't feel well, but didn't take a test. Then I woke up two days later feeling like death warmed over and took a home test.
I pretty much already knew the results.
It was a fun weekend.

(13,783 posts)Grandson got it at school and gave it to his mom. He had symptoms but tested negative, so he curled up with her on the couch while he was sick and that evening he tested positive.
His brother got it at school and gave it to his father.
Son-in-law probably got it from his vaccinated and mostly masked band, although they claimed they all tested negative. But the timing thing, as we see in this thread. They'd have to test every day. Granddaughter got it from him.
Neighbor (93) got it visiting his son and family when teenage grandson caught it. Neighbor was fully vaccinated and claimed mild symptoms. His wife, who never got it, advised us not to believe him. "It was terrible."

On edit: all of us vaxxed and boostered including grandson.

(7,867 posts)It was during that first summer (2020? Everything is a blur now...) before there were vaccines. My mom ended up in the hospital and subsequently ended up in a nursing home for rehabilitation. Shortly before she was to be released, we were notified that they had their first confirmed case of COVID. Mind you, this was back when testing was limited to non-existent. She was released into my care, but they didn't test her or anything before releasing her.
I wore a mask and limited my exposure to her for the first week or so. She never developed any symptoms, so I stopped wearing a mask around here and didn't take as many precautions. I got sick shortly after and called my doctor and they said I should get tested. I went to another city -- once again, testing was limited -- and got tested. Later that day, I was informed that I had COVID. My mom was apparently infected, but asymptomatic, and gave it to me, who was very much symptomatic.
I kept a journal of my symptoms and how I progressed each day. I didn't end up in the hospital, but looking back at some of my vitals -- my oxygen dipped in the 80s regularly -- I might have been if I knew at the time that that was as bad as it was. Luckily, I made a mostly full recovery, even though all told, it probably took me about a month to get back to feel somewhat normal (the exhaustion and easily fatigued stuff still lingered, though).

(7,867 posts)I basically just jotted down a few notes, day by day, as I was dealing with COVID back then:
COVID EXPERIENCE: Got sick around 7/22 (woke up and felt more congested than usual)
coughing to start with, stuffy/slightly runny nose, strange slight brain zaps
felt real weak on exertion around 7/24
no temperature / pulse oximeter low to mid 90s
couldnt smell/taste food around 7/25
around 7/26 became not very sleepy, hard to sleep when I did try to sleep
cold sweat when exerting
burning nostrils
7/29 temps a lil higher than usual, around high 98 low 99
random stabbing pains around body, mainly in chest and back of chest
7/30 temp when waking up my highest so far 99.9
break out into a cold sweat when I try to do anything
feel really weak, no appetite, diarrhea
finally decided to take some Tylenol
7/31 got tested and found out I was positive just a few hours after testing
diarrhea still pretty bad
feel really weak and fatigued on exertion
oxygen levels mainly in low-to-mid 90s, had a bunch of times where I wasnt able to get a reading though (???)
been measuring temperature and it has been closer to my low normal (e.g., 97ish)
8/2, feeling a lil stronger (still very fatigued), tried to eat real dinner instead of crackers for first time in three days, ate pasta and seem to tolerate it well
have regained just a tiny bit of my smell and taste
8/8 havent updated in awhile, started to regain appetite and eat more normally, but then started feeling a bit worse over the past few days, vital signs still relatively good, dont get as tired when first getting up, but I have been sleeping a ton, I think I slept close to 24 hours today (Saturday) and still didnt want to get up, Id wake up very confused but that could just be due to drifting in and out of sleep, I am still having a bunch of those weird zap/body jerk sensations
8/13 I think Im pretty much over it, feel much better, not as tired when getting up to do anything, still some congestion and smell/taste not nearly fully back, but feel pretty good otherwise, close to back to my normal self

(7,867 posts)I forget all the timelines now, but I believe it was 2020, right? It was well before the vaccines, back in the early stages when even testing was hard to come by.

(15,220 posts)Our company did away with the mask requirement and we have to go in one freaking day a week for team building; otherwise, we are remote
Ive been the only one who has continued to mask. I only took the mask off when at my desk or when eating lunch.
The employees are mostly Trumpers and its been a Petri dish. It was bound to happen, and I will admit, it made me mad - both at them and at myself.
I now mask when there. Period. If I need to take a drink of water, I take my water bottle and go outside. I dont eat lunch on premises.
I may get it again but its not going to be for lack of trying not to. This has not been a picnic.

got it two weeks ago. I've been breaking my brain trying to figure out how I got it. I do remember standing in a line at CVS when a 2 year old standing in front of me with her mother sneezed. I jumped back quickly but remember thinking, that child isn't vaccinated and she and her mom weren't wearing masks. I can't think of anything else that could have given it to me. I quarantined in one room so my wife never got it.

(10,426 posts)We were on a cruise in mid-May. While everyone was supposed to be vaxxed and boosted, somehow it got onboard. We *think* it was from when we stopped at St. Kitt's, which was later raised to a Level 3 by the CDC when we got back. Either that, or we got it at a convention that we attended the day that we landed. Either way, we must have come home with it. The day after we got back, my husband started getting a sore throat. I followed him a day later.
Fucking Florida.

(73,543 posts)my younger son came by to see me on the weekend. Both he and I are fully vaxxed and boosted. As he knows I'm a hermit, he usually stops by to ask if I need anything from a store. I was weeding my garden at the time, and he pulled a few weeds along side of me while we had a brief conversation.
At the beginning of the work week, he felt ill, and learned someone he works with had covid. So he called to warn me. Too late -- by mid-week, we both had tested positive, and were feeling sick. Now, this is my son who has won Golden Gloves titles three times now (the last time this May), who works out every day, and likes running 32-mile races in summer, and swimming across lakes. Covid was worse for him than me. Thus, I told him he needs to quit exercising and eat junk food daily to stay at peak health.

(1,900 posts)It was apparently very crowded with kids from all over the country and
he got sick a day or so after his return. I could not get him to cover his cough
and he gave it to me (thrice vaccinated - & tested positive). So, it might have been that BA5 variant
that's supposed to be easy to catch. My symptoms were EXTREME fatigue, some
bronchial congestion, night fever and an on and off cough. Worst symptoms lasted
about 3 days - but was still a bit tired afterward. When I say fatigue - I mean it.
Naps didn't touch it. Now I'm fully recovered.

(11,631 posts)Dead and Company. My wife and I saw a few shows outdoors and were fine until St.Louis where we had pit tickets dancing for 3 hours shoulder to shoulder with a lot of drunk people near the stage. It was very hot and an old man passed out on her. She handed him off to me and I held him until paramedics arrived several minutes later. If I had to guess thats pretty close to precisely how I got it.

Edited to add. We were mole people for almost 2 years; no restaurants, grocery pick-up only, wiped everything with clorox, etc. NO ONE was allowed into our house, period! And then the following happened in January of this year:
Our former daughter-in-law, working on a COVID unit at a local hospital, came into our house without a mask to get our grandkids for the first time in months! I usually had her wait outside, and she had never come in without a mask before this.
She stood in our kitchen and talked for about 5 minutes while I was trying to get the kids together and out. I asked her twice to put on a mask or to step outside and she said she wouldn't be long. The very next day she called and said she had COVID, and a couple of days later so did our 3 y/o granddaughter. Within a week my husband, one adult daughter, and I were all sick with COVID.
Downside of my story: yes I think it was deliberate. She's nuts and was a borderline anti-vaxxer mainly due to a MAGA podunk she's been dating.
Upside of my story: Our son took our 6y/o grandson and got him fully vaccinated. She was not happy about it (a loss of control) but he NEVER got sick!! Yea vaccines!

(1,761 posts)12 people there. 1/3 of the way through some kid 20 seats away started coughing. I put mask on. My son didn't. 3 days later he had it. 3 days after that I had it. It took my husband a week. He was vaxxed six weeks ago. I was SO stupid. Should have left immediately. Thor was not worth it. Even Chris Hemsworth.

(3,858 posts)Omicron wave in late Dec of 2021. I had been on a week long over-landing trip on the Mojave Road, didn't see another soul outside our group the entire time. Got home and didn't go anywhere for a few days, came down sick after three days and my wife and kids followed 2-3 days later. Only time I was around anyone was a quick trip into the truck stop to grab some snacks for the trip home.
Fully vaxed at the time and was wearing a mask while in the truck stop.

(12,657 posts)I worked in a division where we had people going overseas regularly, the entire workplace ended up sick with either pneumonia or a viral infection that wasn't a known flu.
Laz caught it from me, and he's ended up with Long COVID.
Second time, last May, we all came down sick because the other grandfather took the girls on a playdate with his buddy's kids, and one of them had Omicron. We were all vaxed, even the girls, and Laz and I were boosted x2.
So we all got sick again, though it wasn't much worse than a summer cold/allergic reaction. Except Laz's Long COVID symptoms came back to three weeks later.
