Of course tuition wasn't as high as it is now but my family was way lower income. i would not have been able to go to college had it not been for the loan. The payback stated one year after I graduated and I paid it back on time from my salary after I got my first job. Don't tell me the government can't do anything right. Government can do a lot of good when it is not all strung out on helping only the investment class and big business.

and Mr. Retrograde. At the time, you had to be majoring in science, math, or engineering, and payback started after you landed a (full-time, I believe) job after graduating. And the interest rate was about 3%.

IIRC, they were intended to give and maintain a US lead in the Space Race. Back then we acted like we actually valued education in this country - in both major parties.

Interest rate was 1%. Payback started on year after finishing school. Paid it all back in 3 years. And this was when Nixon was president.

So much has changed and not for the good all the time.
