General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI moved to PA recently from a very blue state. One of the first things I did was register to vote.
I was notified that my voter registration card is in the mail. I checked and my polling place is a 10 minute walk away. I also signed up to be a poll worker since I'm don't work on Tuesdays.
I look forward to voting for John Fetterman for senator and Josh Shapiro for governor.

(11,470 posts)I told my husband the other day wished I lived in PA so I could vote for Fetterman, he sounds like a great guy. Don't know the other one. I am in OR so other than my congressman who lives further from me near Idaho than my kids in the Bay Area my state is really cool.

(3,275 posts)Doug Mastriano is a far right republican who has been endorsed by Donald Trump. He and his wife were at the January 6th attack on the capital. He is a christian nationalist who promotes QAnon conspiracies. I don't want this guy anywhere near the governors office.

(757 posts)voter ID in Texas requires an "appointment" which was two months out. On the date, teen went with parents to get ID (a 50 mile round trip) but all their "proof" documents (utility bill, tax bill etc) were in her parents name. She showed her current school ID, and birth certificate showing that these, were indeed her parents etc. But the proof was not good enough and she was sent home to make another appointment and bring in more documents. Yes, the appointment was another two months out. Another 50 mile trip.
Yet, some will say that voter ID is no big deal.

(9,998 posts)A birth certificate should have been enough to register to vote with her parents address if she still lives at home. I registered so long ago that I dont remember what I used, but it was easy.,not so today.

(6,880 posts)I was in the military and registered at my "home of record" Which was my mother's address (and was in California - which, if it was blue then, I was not aware of it. Some parts were, of course.
A quick google on Texas voter registration ends up at
https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/index.html
There's no mention of an "appointment" in this process, which can be accomplished by an online application.
https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/update-voter-registration.html
I wonder if someone has conflated getting a Real-ID drivers license, which does require an appointment and supporting documentation, with registering to vote. Note that getting a DL should provide an opportunity to register to vote.

(22,256 posts)If the young person already has a Texas Driver's license, that should be all she needs.
I hope this gets fixed, and soon. There are some parts of Texas where a driving test must be scheduled, because of wide spaces with few people. The higher population areas may have more than one location with availability 5 days a week.

(1,685 posts)That is interesting. I live in Ohio (Motto: Were trying to out stupid Texas) and when I lost my wallet the November before CoVid I had my wife overnight all kinds of documents to my hotel. When I landed back home I drove straight to the BMV and got the Real ID. Maybe things have changed in Ohio since then.

(2,738 posts)It makes it sound impossibly circuitous to get a drivers license or even an Election Identification Certificate (EIC).
You must have a birth certificate to get a drivers license. But you must have a drivers license to get a birth certificate.
What is not easily deciphered is that a close relative can apply for that birth certificate (mother, father, sibling, grandparents, step parent). So the teenager who doesn't yet have a drivers license and for whom his/her parents haven't acquired a birth certificate, can get it.
Of course it'll cost them. $22 for the birth certificate and $16 for a drivers license or EIC. The birth certificate can be applied for online, but not so the drivers license and EIC and it can easily take 2 months to be seen. But the Secretary of State's office has mobile EIC offices (https://www.votetexas.gov/eic/) and it is likely faster to get one scheduled for your area and get an EIC. Later the student can get a drivers license. This way they won't be likely to miss the voter registration deadline. They may want to work with area voter organizations like the League of Women Voters of Voto Latino to get the mobile office there and get it publicized. October 8 is the last day to register for the November 8 election in Texas.

(14,019 posts)My first drive in, I stopped at a rest stop / welcome center, where official photos of Gov. Wolf and Lt. Gov. Fetterman were prominently displayed.
My first thought was, "why is there a picture of the janitor on the wall." He was wearing a dark grey uniform shirt such as are often seen on people that might regularly come in contact with dirt or oil at work, both of which are plentiful where he's headed.
He'll be a fine Senator, I think.

Everything you need to know about voting in Philadelphia before (or during) the 2022 election on November 8.
BY The Philadelphia Citizen Staff
Aug. 16, 2022
The next election in Philadelphia is Tuesday, November 8, 2022 though mail-in ballots will begin circulating in September.
We put together this handy how-to-vote guide so you can step into the voting booth (or fill out a mail-in ballot) with confidence in who and what youre voting for this election season.
Keep reading to find easy tips on how to register to vote in Pennsylvania, how to check your registration status, how to sign up for mail-in ballots, and how to find your polling place and voting district.
An informed voter is the best kind of voter (though all voters are pretty great), so we hope youll find this useful in the pursuit of your No. 1 civic duty.
First, some important dates: Voting season officially begins on September 19 50 days before the election. Mail-in ballots should begin arriving sometime around then, though theyve been kind of late the last few elections. October 24 is the deadline to register to vote in the general election. November 1 is the last day to request a mail-in or absentee ballot for the general election.

(3,275 posts)I will be working as a poll worker. I have worked as a poll worker on election day for the past 6 years. I was always assigned the polling place near my apartment. If I get assigned a different polling place to work than my own then I will vote early.
BumRushDaShow
(129,053 posts)my polling place was in the basement of my apartment building and I had considered doing poll worker duties once I retired. But then by the time I did retire, I had moved and then a few years later, the mail-in option literally came out of nowhere from the state legislature, and then COVID hit, so that sealed it for me to do the mail voting. Before COVID, the city was running about 1700 or so divisions, usually with a couple per polling site. But with COVID, that was severely slashed from the typical 800+ down to below 200 for that first 2020 primary, and I know that was a nightmare.
Anyway, welcome and I know they were glad to see you sign up!!!

(8,964 posts)In the 1950's when I grew up in Southern California, a large share of my neighbors were not "natives", having migrated to the state from other places in the country. All regions were well-represented, including the east coast. And one family that included a childhood friend had moved there from Philadelphia. I don't recall any "backlash" at the time against those that chose to move there. After all, California was perceived as a land of opportunity. Times have certainly changed.
