(102,283 posts)likely were somewhat protective of him and his reputation, felt as though Mueller (despite any personal shortcomings) had recruited good people to complete the work (and Mueller still probably had many a "good day" throughout the process). Thus, I'd guess his leadership ultimately decided to rapidly comply with the timetable at the end-- having seen the "writing on the wall" that a whitewash was going to occur, regardless. When Barr, the bully came in he knew the weakened Special Counsel position undermined Mueller throughout the process, but now left him unable to fight back against the forces determined to discredit him and his work. Working with the corrupt R's in Congress, and in the exploitation of Mueller's own "honor" Barr was going to have all the tools he needed to close down any real post-investigative actions. He had gotten by with similar over Iran Contra, after all.
The fact that we have heard absolutely nothing about or from Mueller in recent years increases my suspicion that I am right.

(82,849 posts)He was incapable of bucking those above him, even at the cost of having his integrity publicly questioned by people who should have been his allies, or being ridiculed as ineffective by those who knew how hamstrung he was by his personal ethic.
During his testimony before Congress, he went as far as he dared saying that his investigation had turned up evidence of criminality by the administration. Unfortunately, Barr locked Mueller's report away and publicly lied about its contents. Why that didn't cause Mueller to defend himself, I don't know.
