"Your body, your choice. Your debt, you pay." Apparently one of the latest

selfish, reichwing talking points. Heard this last night as a friend was telling me about a mutual acquaintance of ours and her latest diatribe. This woman would rather starve, be flat broke (she refuses to collect her social security), die of some treatable condition, because she will not take the help that is out there, because she does not want to be "one of THOSE people."

It distresses me to see the attitude of that first quote here on DU. I graduated from a private college in the early 70's, and finally managed to pay off (with many harsh words for the blood-suckers) what was not covered by scholarships. What my degree cost back then would not cover one semester at one of the Ivies today. Do I resent the help some are getting now?? OF COURSE NOT. Education is a human right, per the universal declaration to which this country is a signatory, and we are falling WAYYYYY short on so many levels.

"It will be a great day when our schools ( and students) have all the money they need, and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber." (I always wore that shirt when the recruiters came around. For some reason, they did not find it amusing.)

...and too big to prosecute. The litany of excuses surrounding the entire debacle is still infuriating.

No major bank CEOs were criminally charged with causing the financial crisis. Federal prosecutors considered cases against some high-profile figures, including Angelo Mozilo, the chief executive of mortgage giant Countrywide Financial, but ultimately didn’t pursue them. In 2013, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said that some financial institutions had become “so large” that it made it “difficult for us to prosecute them.”

Slaves could, under some circumstances, buy their own freedom.

Think about the slave owners who suddenly lost all of their slaves, when just prior to emancipation, other slave owners were getting compensated to let them go!

Or, even worse, think about the slaves who had bought their freedom, when everyone else later got it for free.
