A white Florida sheriff’s deputy has resigned after he pulled a gun on a pregnant Black woman during a traffic stop as her three distressed children watched on and recorded the tense interaction.

The incident happened Aug. 12 just before midnight when Bradford County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Desue tried to pull over Ebony Washington, of Jacksonville, the sheriff's office said.

Washington was speeding at 75 mph in a 55-mph zone as she drove north on State Road 200, the sheriff's office said, and when Desue indicated that she should pull over, she didn't stop her vehicle. She put on her hazard lights, slowed and drove until she pulled into a gas station in front of a convenience store.

Desue followed her with his siren and emergency lights on and ordered her to stop. At one point, Desue said over the patrol vehicle’s PA system, “Pull the vehicle over or I will put you into the ground!” the sheriff's office said.

luckily, more and more cops are being held to account because of the proliferation of camera phones, lots and lots of videos on YouTube about cops getting charged and convicted for excessive use of force and actually doing prison time, the most famous one, so far, is the George Floyd murder by Derek Chavin.

have the attitude that they are THE final authority on anything and everything because they are "THE LAW".......

In Aurora Co. the police and paramedics EUTHANIZED, (as in murdered) a black kid just walking down the street.......

I think the City of Aurora is gonna pay out tens of millions on that lawsuit, as well as a bunch of other police brutality lawsuits, and yet, the City won't do anything about their police departments behavior.

The criminal courts weren't quite as lenient towards two of their PD and the two Aurora Paramedics for the outright murder of the young man. They have all been charged with some level of homocide, and several already imprisoned.....

Think of all the cases like this that happen and are not recorded that happen across the nation every day......

I love the fact that your state has pretty much neutered the qualified immunity law,

https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/12/18/colorado-tries-new-way-to-punish-rogue-cops

Colorado Tries New Way To Punish Rogue Cops
Individual officers can’t claim ‘qualified immunity’ in excessive force cases, but may not end up paying damages out of their own pockets.

Colorado passed the final version of these sweeping changes in June, including one drawing national attention: Now police officers who violate people’s civil rights can be held personally responsible in state court.

And they can’t use the defense that experts say has stymied many efforts to hold police to account: “qualified immunity.” It’s a legal doctrine that says government workers can’t be held liable for what they do on the job, except in rare circumstances.

This needs to be done in every state and on a federal level but it needs to be beefed up to make sure the payment came out of the offending officer's pocket.

The cities should not be paying out on these astronomical lawsuits..........Instead they should be spending the millions in cleaning up the police depts they are enabling by back handedly condoning their officers behavior.

There are some great officers out there, they should staff with recruits just like them.
It's the old adage: A few bad apples spoil the whole barrel.......

We are continuing to move slowly until we can stop the vehicle safely.

When this woman tries to explain what she was doing and why, the cop is furious and is verbally abusive
and starts waving his gun around. Looks like he put her in handcuffs, right in front of her young children.

As a man, I can say I have always known to drive to a safe spot. If it's night, a well-lit, preferably public place.

If this victim had pulled over in the dark middle of nowhere, it is much more likely that this situation would have turned out much, much worse and certainly not in her favor.

I also think it is remarkable that one of her young children recorded the incident on their phone. Perhaps that mother instructed the child to record the scene. Either way, for a child that young to have the presence of mind in the midst of this situation to record is a reflection of how people of color are taught at a young age that they must protect themselves in any encounter with law enforcement.

We live in such a pathetic state, where the good guys are the bad guys and the bad gals are the good gals. I pray things can improve in my lifetime, for the sake of future generations.

In fact, he had already been required to tender his resignation after a history of misconduct. He entered into an agreement whereby the resignation would not be accepted unless he violated policy again within a year. He did — on this occasion — and the resignation was accepted. He was on a “last chance agreement,” and he screwed that up.

This guy should never have been out there in the first place. He is temperamentally unsuited to the job, but all you need to be a cop in most places is a GED and an IQ below 104, which enables you to go to cop trade school.

Cops run into this situation, especially with women.

I've twice over the past 55 years late in the evening responded by slowing, tapping my brakes and turn signal or whatever, but continuing to drive on from a lone, dark stretch to a hopefully safer place to stop. None of the cops were exactly pleased, but they accepted my explanation (after checking my record). In fact, both times I wasn't ticketed when they found out the why of whatever drew me to their attention. (Once I was drying my brakes on an empty boulevard, driving slowish and pressing on them erratically/now and then, after accidentally dropping into a deep puddle in a heavy rainstorm.)
