Instead she had to hike down the hill, cross a stream, catch a train into town and then walk from the train station to school. No, I'm not making this up - her father was a carpenter and had a job building sheep barns out in the country with housing provided for his family.

The first day, her mother walked her down to the railroad tracks to flag down the train. Once the conductor knew they were supposed to stop, the train stopped there every school day for Mom to ride the train into town.
