1. It's not all the people...

Just a very loud minority

2. True, not all the people but I wouldn't minimize it. There are probably enough

racists or enablers to match the size of at least a medium sized country.

4. Problem is that within a population, at least 1/2 are not politically active.

These people are not the ones who will "fight for their country". They will only fight - or vote- if their interests (including those of their family or maybe their local community) are at stake.
Just to be realistic. It's not that these people don't care, it's that they can't conceptualize anything beyond their own experiences.
They will happily leave the running of their country to whichever group gains power so long as their lives don't change for what they see as "the worst".
Those people, while generally "smart" or good natured, are easily conned by anyone who tells them what lets them feel comfortable or better. They will allow the loud minority of grifters and troll farm mouthpieces scare them into voting against their best interests.

Complacency will be the death of our world.
