The newer versions actually turn off but you could pretty much heat your house with an old style AGA range. They are beautiful!

Britain uses gas, electric, oil, wood, multi fuel, solar, nuclear, hydrogen, wind and tide power generation. Can’t seem to make up our minds. 😉

The problem is that not all services are available in all areas. Here in the Cotswolds we use gas and electric and pay for water.

At our joint up in Orkney, we only have electric, but our water is included in our council tax.

All energy is going to cost more. The regional resource wars are just getting started.

We refurbished an old cottage with views directly of the bay at St. Margaret's Hope. Can't wait to spend the winters up there - check it out, just search for studio house orkney it will pop up somewhere.

I think Orkney is the last affordable place to buy a home in the UK these days.

I did hear the winters can be dark and cold and stormy.
The wind blows in off the North Sea.

We stayed in a beautiful home with the most wonderful greenhouse out back. . I did have trouble understanding the locals for a little while but not for long. And people were so nice.

I wish I could go back but I am too old now.

It is going up. From NPR/AP

"The latest price cap — the maximum amount that gas suppliers can charge customers per unit of energy — will take effect Oct. 1, just as the cold months set in. And bills are expected to rise again in January to 4,000 pounds.'

https://www.npr.org/2022/08/26/1119567595/households-across-the-u-k-are-about-experience-an-80-jump-in-energy-costs

The water seems to have already been going up

"Cost of living – latest: Water bills to rise as Sunak warns middle earners they’ll ‘feel pinch’ of gas prices

Water bills will rise by almost 2 per cent in England and Wales from April, Water UK has said. "

Our utilities have really gone up but nothing like that.

So how much will utilities cost all together?

And since that's a significant fuel for electricity generation, it drives the increase in electricity cost too.

In the current period (up to close of play on 30 September), a customer with “typical usage” paying by direct debit is being charged a maximum of 28p a kWh for electricity and 7p a kWh for gas. From 1 October those will rise to 52p and 15p respectively.

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2022/aug/26/what-is-energy-price-cap-explained-mean-uk-cost

So you can see that the unit price of gas is slightly more than doubling, and electricity just under twice. The water price increase is negligible.
