When you see the right moaning over poor Mitt Romney to justify themselves doing the worst things (like supporting Trump), I wrote a handy reminder that its all bullshit

Mitt Romney Is No Angel: He Helped The Rise Of Trump Racism
Romney Wasn't A Victim In The 2012 Election, He Just Lost

To hear the conservative version of events in the 2012 election is to hear a child recounting the details of a bizarrely twisted and self-serving fairy tale.
In their mangled retellings, Mitt Romney was a victim. Romney came to the American people, hat in hand, offering up a sober conservative agenda of tax cuts and limited government. For the sin of making his intellectual offering, the story goes, Romney was fed to the buzzsaw. Democrats and the mainstream media brutally attacked poor, vulnerable, naïve Mitt, savaging his lantern-jawed reputation and smearing his character until he was unelectable at the national level.
This version of events is retold by the right to justify their current intellectual status: Rolling and luxuriating in the filth of racism, bigotry, and hate in the open manner pioneered by Donald Trump. Republicans are up front ogres, it is argued, because everyone was so darned mean to poor Mitt Romney.
It is utter bullshit.
Romney has always been and will always be a power-hungry, craven political actor. Beneath his veneer of genteel mannerism lurks a man who will do anything, morals be damned, to attain higher office. The best example of this is the very same election Republicans hold up the Mitt the Martyr myth for: 2012.

If I had to pinpoint a moment, when Mitt Romney spent his entire campaign being accused of killing Big Bird, building binders full of women, torturing the family dog, etc etc.

When did the GOP become the party of jerks? https://thedailybeast.com/ron-desantis-and-dr-mehmet-oz-embrace-their-inner-pricks

(25,981 posts)Mitt did dump on Big Bird by threatening PBS funding (seriously, wtf?), he did talk about binders full of women as though actual women didn't exist, and he did strap the dog crate on top of the car for a family road trip. Dude. Strap the luggage on top of the car. The dog rides with the family or you board him/leave him home with a sitter. I'm sorry, all of it bothered me, everything about Mitt Romney bothers me, but the poor dog. That tells you what kind of person he is right there.
He was "being accused" because he actually said and did all of these things and more. /rant off
Some of the responses in that thread just... yikes. Rupert Murdoch has a lot to answer for.

(133 posts)Romney has always tried to present himself as a compassionate conservative by publishing an editorial about one a year on a matter that his GOP is pressing forward. He tries to distance himself without distancing himself. Throws a lot of word salad around and the media jumps on it like he actually took a definitive stand. He waffles all over the place. Real Jerk. He has millions and his seat is safe, he could take hard hits at Trump and the Republicans but he doesn't .....he is spineless.
