The conservative Wisconsin senator the chamber's most vulnerable incumbent this fall could soon face a very tough vote.

The most endangered Senate Republican incumbent whos trailing his reelection foe in one of the most closely divided states in the country could face a tough vote just weeks out from Election Day on whether to enshrine same-sex marriage into law.
As Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer moves closer to a vote that would put Sen. Ron Johnson on defense in the home stretch of the midterms, the Wisconsin conservative is suddenly under the microscope on a social issue that hes rarely focused on during his decade-plus in office. But its far from clear whether hell take that baby step to the center ahead of a November contest against Democratic Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, whos opened a slight lead in public polls.
Johnson surprised many fellow senators last month when he said he saw no reason to oppose what he described as unnecessary House-passed legislation designed to protect same-sex marriage, which could come to the floor as soon as next month. Then, when pressed later, he hedged on whether hed vote yes or merely present. And hes now pushing, alongside other Senate Republicans, for the bill to be amended before declaring his support.
During the time hes been back in Wisconsin over recess, he has spoken with a number of constituents who have concerns about the bill and the risk it may pose to religious liberty, said Alexa Henning, Johnsons spokesperson. He is working with other senators on an amendment to try and remedy those concerns. The [same-sex marriage bill] is just another example of Democrats creating a state of fear over a settled issue in order to further divide Americans for their political benefit.

Golly! If your religion forbids you to get gay married, then don't do it! But that constraint really doesn't apply to anyone else that doesn't subscribe to your particular religious beliefs. That's how religious liberty works, you know.

The definition of "religious liberty" which means the opposite of what you think it does.
They mean that you can't rent a reception hall from a non-religious facility, because the owner professes to believe in a religion which doesn't like other people's ideas about religious liberty.
