(42,704 posts)At Netanyahu's request, he was pardoned 33 years after he was charged.
Saucier served his one year sentence and was released from prison in September 2017. Trump pardoned him six months after he got out of jail (in 2018 -- not a "late" pardon).

(16,927 posts)He had his corps of flunkies who did ALL of the 'thinking' (sic) for him - they TOLD him what to think - he'd say "Yeah, that's what I want!" - and the corps would do what the 'brains' of the RepubliQan party wanted.
Again, House and Senate RepubliQans didn't give a single S**T what tRump did - as long as he signed what THEY had passed. He scratched their bal..., er, back, and they kissed his A$$ and let him play 'LEADER!'
So THEN, and even NOW, he has NO F**KING CLUE as to what has happened, who-did-what, or what it all means! (This is the 21st Century version of "The Wizard of Oz" - the fool behind the curtain has NO clue - and to think that we have another 'fool' running with that 'name!'

(47,114 posts)Either these guys paid a very large amount of money for the pardons or they were of some use to Trump.
Good catch and I hope the FBI is doing the same detective work and looking at these two guys.

(5,125 posts)And after the pardon, gets rank of Brigadier General.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/after-34-year-delay-pollard-handler-aviem-sella-promoted-to-brigadier-general/
Col. (res.) Aviem Sella, the recruiter of Jonathan Pollard, the American naval intelligence analyst who spied on the United States for Israel, will receive the rank of brigadier general on Wednesday, the military said, 34 years after he was due to be promoted but instead left the army over his role in the espionage affair.
Sella, who has long since retired from military service, was meant to receive the rank of brigadier general in 1987, when he was tapped to command the Israeli Air Forces Tel Nof Base. But due to his involvement in the Pollard affair, which caused a serious strain in the Israeli-American relationship, Sella instead stepped down from his position and fully retired from the military five years later.

(23,319 posts)I fear a Dem may pardon TFG. It could happen....it shouldn't, of course. By all rights he should die in jail...But, depending on how healthy our country is at that moment...how close to civil war we are. This has the real potential to not end the way we want it to.

Pollards spying is considered one of the more damaging leaks in US intelligence history, revealing extensive guidance on US signals intelligence and the names of hundreds if not thousands of intelligence sources.

(5,125 posts)A number of officials strongly suspect that the Israelis repackaged much of Pollards material and provided it to the Soviet Union in exchange for continued Soviet permission for Jews to emigrate to Israel.
Other officials go further, and say there was reason to believe that secret information was exchanged for Jews working in highly sensitive positions in the Soviet Union.
A significant percentage of Pollards documents, including some that described the techniques the American Navy used to track Soviet submarines around the world, was of practical importance only to the Soviet Union... Tells about Pollard's sale of a highly-classified ten-volume signal intelligence "bible"...
A senior intelligence official whose agency was involved in preparing the report for the White House told me, somewhat facetiously, that he would drop all objections to Pollards immediate release if the Israeli government would answer two questions: First, give us a list of what youve got, and, second, tell us what you did with it....

(8,203 posts)When he campaigned in 2016 he said it wasn't fair that Saucier was locked up for taking photos on a submarine but Hillary wasn't prosecuted for, you know, her emails.

And Aviem Sella's pardon came at the request of Israel. More than thirty years had passed. That might have fallen under trying to curry favor with Netanyahu.

(5,125 posts)In 2009, Saucier took photographs of classified areas on the submarine while it was moored at Naval Submarine Base New London in Connecticut.
The photographs showed components of the submarine nuclear propulsion system, including "various control panels, a panoramic view of the reactor compartment and a panel that showed the condition and exact location of the submarine at the time the photo was taken."
FBI forensics showed that some of the photographs were taken at unusual hours, such as one photograph taken at 4 a.m. and others taken at 1:30 a.m. Personal electronic devices are prohibited aboard U.S. submarines owing to sensitive areas on board.

(5,125 posts)Mr. Sellas request for clemency is supported by the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer, the United States ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and Miriam Adelson, the statement read. The State of Israel has issued a full and unequivocal apology, and has requested the pardon in order to close this unfortunate chapter in US-Israel relations.

The casino-owning couple and perennial super-spenders Sheldon and Miriam Adelson set a new record for donations from individuals in a single election cycle, giving $172.7 million.
