He said he was going to follow the law. I have no choice but to believe him.
There are those that have criticized him for going too slow but he's not going to indict anyone unless he knows he has an ironclad case. I trust that he knows where he is going.
He is gathering evidence. In my opinion, he would like to get enough evidence to persuade even Republicans that something has to be done. He understands that it is almost impossible to indict and convict an ex-president unless both sides see the merit in the prosecution.
That might take a while and it may never happen.
We do not know what evidence will turn up in the next few weeks or months?
The country needs some sort of consensus about the nature and the seriousness of the crimes before they can come together.
That is a big job but I am supporting Merrick Garland at this time. I see no other alternative.
As much as I would like to see Donald Trump indicted tomorrow, I do not believe that it would work out for the best for the country.

(9,998 posts)Personally, I do not expect an indictment. But if I end up being correct, I'm still not going to accept it.
It will be further confirmation to my belief that this country is on a fast decline, and that there is No Accountability for those who are powerful enough.

That's what you stated.
Myself, I don't expect he'll feel there's enough to go on, either today, tomorrow or next year for that matter. Therefore, eventually this will all disappear.

(2,818 posts)who will never accept no indictment; especially not after being caught with classified documents at Mar a Lago. Not after I served my country for over 20+ years in the military and as DoD in Civil Service. All that says to me is there is one set of laws for the "little people" and one set of laws for the rich and entitled people. And we don't survive as a country that way.
I hope Garland understands this in the very essence of his being. It doesn't come from being a judge. It comes from being an American. It comes from love of country. It comes from being a civil servant, and all that means to those of us who committed our hearts and lives to the cause.
If I were still working for the DoD and there were no indictment, I'd hand in my letter of resignation with cause stated quite clearly the very day it was announced. I would hope every civil servant would follow suit. It wouldn't take Trump "cleaning house" at his next election to empty out the departments, I would hope. But people gotta eat, I guess.
I honestly can't see any way that Garland doesn't indict. It's too obvious Trump broke the law, at least on the documents charge. It would be too much a slap in the face to too many people, to too many veterans. Gods, I hope he doesn't. I wrote the last sentence with my dog just now yipping with a nightmare in his sleep. That's how I feel right now, too!

(2,818 posts)and the fact they were held, unsecured, in Mar a Lago -should- be proof enough, I would think. I mean, how much more in-your-face proof would you need? Especially after boxes were held back once the DOJ went to get them the first time?

(10,052 posts)He investigates and indicts the crimes doesn't matter who committed them. It is a very large investigation with many tentacles, I keep wondering will they indict them all separately or will they put them all together. He is still investigating who else is involved and has to have air tight cases on them all to take them down. It is a criminal enterprise.

Garland HAS to get it right the first time. If he tries to indict Mr. PeePee Tape for, say, holding on to the classified papers too long, and there is just endless wrangling over whether he knew if he had the papers, what papers he could have had the power to declassify, etc., and then AFTER had proof that the info in those docs were SOLD to a foreign enemy, it would look like Garland was making sh-t up to save his reputation.
No, if Garland is going to do this, ITS GOT TO STICK THE FIRST TIME!
He needs enough evidence to turn some Republicans.

(24,300 posts)it will be the biggest failure in the history of the federal justice system and may Merrick Garland go down in history as the worst Attorney General in the history of the United States.
If you want to see what a divided country looks like, just try letting Trump walk away free.
