And, quite frankly, I'm inclined to boycott CNN myself by switching to MSNBC.

(113,958 posts)news on DOJ's MAL investigation, I turned over to John King who was simultaneously reporting all the latest and breaking news on the same story. I am horrified that there are such lazy producers for her show and some others (though, not, fortunately for the prime time shows, nor Nicole Wallace's show, certainly).

Rachel is just a part timer and Nicolle explains in 5 minutes what takes Rachel 20 minutes. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people like Rachel's Story Book Theater style.

I also wish this I-only-do-Mondays shit would STOP.
NOBODY'S so sacrosanct and untouchable that they should be allowed to do that. It disrupts the whole week. It will confuse viewers. Uh - okay, Maddow's on Mondays. But then somebody else is on the rest of the week in whatever time slot that is. But everybody else is on a five-day workweek - except for Her Royal Highness Princess Privilege?
NO. NOBODY'S that special that she (or he, for that matter) and break up the weeknight schedule because she's tired of the routine or she doesn't feel like working that hard anymore.
Then she's out.
That's what I'd do if I were head of MSNBC. Either you're in all the way, or the alternative. Which is: you're OUT all the way. I need a consistent block of programming across the weeknights, without cutting a big fat awkward divot out of the 9pm Eastern slot. I need all five weeknights from you. Like everybody else on in prime time gives me. If you just can't bring yourself do that anymore, and you only want to do one show a week, we'll move you to Saturday evenings and you can do a weekly special "That Was the Week that Was" kind of thing, but you can do it anyway you want. I'll give you TWO hours on Saturday evening. Lead-in to "Saturday Night Live," which ain't too shabby.
That's the deal. Take it or leave it. Cuz I've got somebody (Alex Wagner) stuck doing four nights a week and confusing viewers because the whole primetime lineup is broken up, and she should be able to step up and have all five nights of her own - "like the grown-ups have." Otherwise, she's always gonna be presented as the junior partner, not on equal footing with Lawrence O'Donnell and the rest of the evening lineup. Which is not a good way to present air talent having been given a presumably sterling time slot.
That's what I'd tell her agent. And I'd give them a weekend to make up their minds.
NOBODY is irreplaceable. Johnny Carson? Well, he gave about 30 years of service. And he was a freakin' MOUNT EVEREST. He was King Kong AND Godzilla all in one. But time passes, things change, and well, he and all the rest of us soon realized even he wasn't irreplaceable. The "Tonight Show" went on successfully, showcasing new hosts, and making new people household names. Anybody remember Johnny Carson now (except us old-timers, that is)?
I am rapidly losing patience with Rachel Maddow.
niyad
(132,440 posts)noticed. Clearly, the big bosses at msnbc take a different view than you do, and they are the ones in charge. Some of the terms of her contract were discussed extensively here. So your insistence that she is acting as if she were irreplacable is off the mark.
Frankly, your insistence on a 5-day work week is a bit strange. Many people in many fields have very different schedules.
You are, of course, free to have lost patience with Dr. Maddow. But, clearly, the bosses at msnbc do not share your view.
calimary
(90,017 posts)And it may be what the US is eventually moving toward. But thats not the general structure we have. At least not yet.
If it was such a good idea, why didnt the MSNBC brass switch over the entire prime time lineup that way? At least itd be consistent.

many times, she is reporting information new to her. I imagine the repetition in those stories give her a chance to choose her words and convey the news and its import.
I don't think the repetition is necessary in her planned comments, but she's got to stretch the content to the next commercial break
it used to bother me, but not all people are up to date on aspects of the information she is going to talk about.
PatSeg
(53,214 posts)This has been discussed numerous times. Even though Rachel does come up with some very interesting stories, she can drag a five minute story out to 20 or 30 minutes using numerous repetitions. I used to fast-forward a lot and I eventually just quit watching her show.
Now that she is only on one night a week, I can handle it, but I still hit the fast-forward button frequently.

I got so turned off over the years listening to her repeat herself because she doesn't have enough substance to fill the time block.

(12,248 posts)We don't have enough left voices to counter the rightwing bs? It's because the left doesn't support media once a style they disagree with or one view they don't agree with, it's boycott time. It's gotten ridiculous. Maddow is one of our best voices for truth against the rw propaganda, yet here we are.
People want to counter rw propaganda with what? Exact certain words delivered in an exact certain way, otherwise, they're Done! I don't watch the tv news! Like that's some sort of fuckin badge of honor to jump into Every conversation about the TV news that they don't even fuckin watch!
Ugh. Our news folks on the left are doing a pretty good job. Maddow, Cooper, Velshi, Wallace, etc... I am working too much to watch in real time, but am trying to watch clips after and before work. I am thankful for their analysis and guests, especially lately!

(13,431 posts)She repeats things so those who are not regulars can be brought up to speed. Sometimes she has to put it in perspective because people need to be able to connect the dots. Not everyone is reading the news all day or as we know many have short memories, she gets the later crowd that has been working all day. I miss her.

Combine that with the Howie Kurtz years, the insistance on putting one Democrat and one Republikkan on every news story for 'balance' (it's like inviting two people to argue whether 2+2=4) -- basically partisan balance, where there is none, and their use of breaking story was just embarrassing... oh like the time I turned my TV on in Korea and they were showing numerous police cars and Blitzer was narrating. I thouight someone had been killed. No. They were waiting for Paris Hilton to come out to turn herself over to the police to do like two weeks in jail.
