If you haven't yet read Margaret Talbot's very long but very revealing article in The New Yorker about Sam Alito, it really is a must read! It's too long and too detailed for me to begin to summarize here, but here's the link:

My takeaway: Sam Alito has been a cultural misfit his entire life, and he has built up 72 years' worth of resentments over it. And now he is looking to exact his revenge!

And while I was on the fence about such a move, it might be the best way forward.
But I wouldn't just bump it to 13. I would increase the size to 21. I would prefer 99, with the justification that the country is over 10 times the size that it was when we landed on 9.

(15,751 posts). . . The justice has made speeches to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a rabidly free-market think tank for which he helped raise $70,000; the libertarian Manhattan Institute; and the Federalist Society. Hes also spoken at fundraisers for the American Spectator, a conservative magazine that, among other things, drove the character assassination of Anita Hill. . . '

(3,503 posts)Nothing lasts forever. Without deep seated agreement, Alito is only temporarily deviating the path our country and future generations will take. Personally, I really don't care what happens after I die, nor do I think it's my right to dictate what direction others will eventually decide to go. This is astroturf in the truest form. Baring a great religious revival, I don't see the majority of people in this country reverting back to some "religious" plurality that probably didn't exist back at the country's founding.
That said, there may be some collective generational teachings in religion that are probably helpful. For example, do unto others as you would have others do unto you. It's just common sense really but following this only helps us collectively carry on with our lives with minimal intrusion into our decisions.

How inspiring! I also just read an old Borowitz column showing that Alito's opinion saying the EPA cannot regulate carbon monoxide contradicts his vision of preserving fetal life at all costs, as CO greatly reduces fetal health and viability. I think Borowitz stumbled onto a key argument in his humor, as he often does.
