THE PREMISE POLL: 73% of Poll Respondents Approve of President Bidens Student Loan Forgiveness Plan; Only 27% Feel the plan goes too far.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Premise, a global on-demand insights company that democratizes the way data is sourced and analyzed, surveyed 903 American adult contributors about President Bidens recently announced student loan forgiveness plan. Premise announced the results of that survey today, finding overwhelming support for the presidents plan.
On Wednesday, August 24th, President Biden announced his plan to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loans for Pell grant recipients and up to $10,000 for other individual federal loan recipients, both with a $125,000 income cap. The plan also further extended the COVID-19 pause on federal student loan repayments through the end of the year, with payments resuming in January 2023.
Those surveyed shared their thoughts on the plan itself, the fairness of it, whether it went far enough, and more. Here are some of the most significant findings:
73% of respondents strongly or somewhat approved of President Bidens plan, and 27% somewhat or strongly disapproved of it.

(2,807 posts)1. Most Americans support student loan forgiveness, poll finds
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/most-americans-support-student-loan-193640099.html
A recent national poll conducted by progressive think tank Data for Progress found 60 percent of 1,425 respondents agreed the federal government should eliminate all or some student loan debt for every borrower.
The poll found more than half of past student loan borrowers and voters who never borrowed student loans believed some or all student debt should be eliminated.
Previous polling, however, showed a much narrower majority of Americans that support the Biden administrations plans.
Recent polling suggests the majority of American voters may be in favor of the Biden administrations decision to forgive billions of dollars of student loan debt for low- to middle-income borrowers.
President Biden on Wednesday announced his administration is forgiving up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 annually and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. The unprecedented decision will provide some financial relief to tens of millions of borrowers while about 15 million borrowers could see their entire balances eliminated.
A recent national poll conducted by progressive think tank Data for Progress just before Bidens announcement found 60 percent of 1,425 respondents agreed the federal government should eliminate all or some student loan debt for every borrower, compared to 34 percent who said the government should not forgive the loans and 6 percent who said they didnt know. The poll was conducted Aug. 19-21 online and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

(2,807 posts)4. Student Loan Forgiveness: New Poll Shows 64% Support
https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedman/2022/04/18/student-loan-forgiveness-new-poll-shows-64-support/?sh=23dbd1a350c9
A new poll shows that 64% of respondents support student loan forgiveness.
Heres what you need to know.
Student Loans
A new, national tracking poll from Morning Consult and Politico shows how approximately 2,000 registered voters feel about student loan forgiveness. Lets explore.
Student loan forgiveness: how much and who benefits
When asked if the federal government should forgive student loans, here were the responses:
PROMOTED
cancel all student loans for all student loan borrowers (19%)
cancel all student loans for lower-income student loan borrowers (13%)
cancel some student loans for all student loan borrowers (16%)
cancel some student loans for lower-income student loan borrowers (16%)
dont cancel any student loans (29%)
Lets break down some key observations about student loan forgiveness. (Biden still considering wide-scale student loan cancellation). First, 64% of respondents collectively support at least some amount of student loan forgiveness. Second, for respondents who prefer to cancel student loans, cancel all student loans for all student loan borrowers received 19%, which is the highest percentage of support. Third, 32% prefer total student loan cancellation for either all student loan borrowers or lower-income student loan borrowers only. (Biden dropped student loan cancellation from his annual budget). Fourth, 32% of respondents support some student loan cancellation, including for all student loan borrowers and lower-income borrowers. Fifth, 29% of respondents dont want any student loans canceled, which is the single highest of any of the answer choices. From a legislative perspective, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) supports total student loan cancellation of all $1.7 trillion of student loan debt. (Senator: Cancel all student loans). While he has proposed legislation, Congress doesnt support it. One question that is missing in this poll is whether some student loans should be canceled for some student loan borrowers who dont earn a low income. For example, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) support this approach, and their plan would cancel up to $50,000 for student loan borrowers who earn up to $125,000 annually. (Heres who wont qualify for $6.2 billion of student loan cancellation.
When asked how important of a priority it is for Congress to pass legislation to provide student loan relief, here are the responses:
top priority (23%)
important, but lower priority (24%)
not too important (21%)
should not be done (25%)
First, respondents were roughly divided in their support for Congress to pass legislation on student loan relief. Second, 25% of respondents said there should be no legislation on student loan relief for student loan borrowers, which was the single highest response to this question. (Student loan cancellation and the student loan payment pause are confusing. Heres what to know).
President Joe Biden extended the student loan payment pause for the fourth time during his presidency. (Student loan payment pause: 5 questions). Progressive Democrats have called this student loan relief through August 31, 2022 an essential financial lifeline during the Covid-19 pandemic. Republicans in Congress have labeled the continued student loan payment pause as fiscally irresponsible and bad public policy. When asked if they supported or opposed the extension of student loan relief, 53% of respondents either strongly or somewhat support the extension. In contrast, 36% either strongly or somewhat oppose the extension of the student loan moratorium. (Biden could extend the student loan payment pause forever).

(35,386 posts)6. I support it. I never had a student loan myself. My
brother passed away when my niece graduated high school. She put herself through college with work and a student loan. Now she can get on with her life without being saddled with debt all her life.

(19,140 posts)7. Great news
I knew it was popular before he did it and was a little puzzled to see him attacked by the media after he did exactly what he said he was going to do. But this is a really popular idea and he's done a great job of framing it as helping working people.
Republicans were looking for an opening because they desperately don't want to talk about women's rights. Not going to happen here.
