Republicans Are Running Scared On Abortion Rights: Make Them Pay For It

https://oliverwillis.substack.com/p/republicans-are-running-scared-on

The Republican Party’s position on abortion, despite the way they speak about it and especially how it is covered in the mainstream media, is extremely unpopular. That position, as expressed in the party’s own platform for multiple elections along with legislation it has passed in multiple states and is considering at the federal level, is the blanket opposition to abortion. The party supports the idea of “personhood,” meaning that there are no instances in which an abortion is allowed. None.

In every presidential election but one since 1988 the candidate running under the banner of the Republican Party’s extremist anti-abortion position has received fewer votes than the Democratic, pro-choice nominee. George H. W. Bush in 1992. Bob Dole in 1996. George W. Bush in 2000. John McCain in 2008. Mitt Romney in 2012. Donald Trump in 2016 and in 2020.

Republican presidents appointed the Supreme Court justices who repealed Roe vs. Wade. It was a success shared by Bush and Trump, engineered by Senate Republicans led by Mitch McConnell.

Not only was it a moral mistake that repealed hard-won rights owed to American women, but it has been a political mess.

1. We'll definitely gain votes in November over this

But it's harder to say in future elections.

The threat of the Republicans striking down Roe V Wade in 2024 and beyond won't be there. Because they already did it.

The party will have to pivot from fear of roevwade being struck down, to an incentive play of the Dems restoring it if elected.

4. Well, we can't ever let them get control of Congress or the WH or they'll pass a national ban.

We need to enshrine abortion rights in the fall and we need Dems from mayor to governor to Congress and all points in between to support a woman’s right to control her body. Otherwise the GOP will take that right across America!

But the pendulum is something that we have never ever been able to stop swinging.

6. But if politicians vote for abortion bans, they will become targets of the majority.

Their opponents can hammer them repeatedly, and hopefully get them voted out of office.

The fight for abortion rights will NEVER be settled until it's enshrined in the Constitution and legal and available in all 50 states.

7. Unless we are able to codify abortion rights nationally, this issue is not going away

for the GOP.

The horror stories from women and young girls denied abortion care in certain states have barely begun to be heard. They are certain to pile up.

If we lose the house, I think the issue will be even bigger in 2024.... but I am hopeful that a tsunami of pro-choice new voters will help us to keep the house this year...

If not, I feel certain that the Republicans can't hold it for more than 2 years. The abortion issue will be a boiling pot, and a Republican house will overreach, probably impeaching Biden without there being any crime, among other horror stories. (They should refresh their memory about what they did in 1998 with Clinton, which resulted in a loss of house seats for them that year.)

BTW, 'the threat of Republicans striking down Roe' isn't here this year, either-- since they've now done it.
We've lived with the "threat" of it for decades, but the threat didn't motivate enough voters... and most people thought it would never happen. Now they have to deal with the reality of it, and women who have never bothered to vote are now registering in great numbers.

This is a new ballgame, and it's not good for Republicans.

State legislatures have been ground-zero for the most extreme anti-choice laws. GOP controlled states are also where we have seen some of the most over the top, voter restriction and anti-democracy movements.

Democrats need to make sure every Republican is challenged on this issue in even the reddest corners of the reddest states. No safe districts. No place to hide their stand. No shifting positions after their primaries and not get called out.

need to link all their culture war nonsense to their never-ending fight to end abortion. DeSantis, their most successful culture warrior of late, really should be tightly linked to the end of Roe V Wade.
