I pastor a liberal mainstream congregation in a small city in PA.
I am very careful NOT to appear to endorse a political candidate,
but preach openly about inclusiveness, compassion, caring for the poor, etc-
(and we are very active in local ministries to the poor and disabled)-
This weekend I received a few very infuriating messages on the church
answering machine:
1. Saturday: "This is Bishop So-And-So... With Father Whatchamacallit,
and we're calling to remind you this election affects the very core of our
being as Christian Americans. We hope we can count on you to convince
your congregation to vote for the true Christian who supports traditional
family values. Any other choice is not Christian,
and in fact may impact their spiritual future.."
Totally annoyed, I deleted the message; how insulting that any other time
Bishop S0-And-So pretends I don't exists, as I am a raving feminist;
to them, a woman in the pulpit is the antichrist.
BUT the kicker was this morning: the message:
"Greetings Christian colleague, this is Dr. James Dobson calling to remind you
and your congregation how critical this election will be for those who hold
dear solid Christian family values. We know you support those traditional values
of home, family and country..."
I didn't allow the message to continue, but deleted it, really stoked up.
Of course they wouldn't call during business hours, as I'd let them have it...
I know they were robo-calls, but why a liberal denomination and not their
own limited, bigoted parishes?
ANd I informed my congregation: "You get robo-calls, the church gets them.
Do not be swayed by so -called 'authorities' who manipulate you into thinking
your 'spiritual future' is affected by how you vote. If you believe that, I have
some indulgences I wanna sell you... "
They roared with laughter.....
"The truly 'christian' candidate'??
There's nothing remotely 'Christian' about that lying plutocrat
who cannot for the life of him empathize with anyone about anything.
No comment about Mormonism... I have met some lovely Mormons
who live according to a strict moral code... But Romney? Not a chance.
But I try to live by "judge not lest ye be judged...."
However... Matthew 25: "I was hungry and you fed me; ill, and you cared for me;
naked and you clothed me; in jail, and you visited me..."
Ever read that passage Mitt?

(17,865 posts)referring to Romney as a Christian. It would be like referring to a Jew or a Moslem as a Christian. It makes absolutely no sense.

(12,081 posts)just proves what it is really all about. Power. They don't care who is in power. They don't really even care what religion someone is as long as they will do whatever the church tells them to do.

(322 posts)It's disturbing just how un-Christ-like some factions in this nation have become. . .all while claiming to operate under the banner of Christian values.

(9 posts)Recall the view that congress makes laws and a President only exists to sign them. This Republican view applies to every aspect of your lives. Romney promised to compromise with Dems. BUT IT IS REPUBLICNS WHO CONTROL CONGRESS. That's how Hitler accommodated the Nazis as Romney will accommodate the Republican led Congress. He has NO MORALS, NO POLICIES. He's there to give money to rich. In return he'll give his signature to whatever Dark Ages legislation the Republican crazies in Congress demand. That's the compromise: Romney gets outrageous tax breaks for rich and Congress gets the Inquisition for the rest of us!!!!!

(9,074 posts)Obama is a Christian and supports traditional values along with progressive values. Traditional values should include human rights for everyone and he also supports a little something called facts.
Romeny supports everything and nothing depending on which color of spray tan he gets in a day and he is an incessant liar.

My dad was an ex-catholic who bloomed when away from
the bootheel of the oppressive priests..
Sad, because I've known very progressive priests
who don't play the games...
