It must have really hit her hard as she was pretty young when it happened and she felt certain (as did her female friends) that Ethel was a scapegoat fingered by the other men involved. Years later, that appears to have been the case.
So, I remember clearly the story, yet I suspect fewer much younger than I do.

Treason is a very specific charge which doesn't apply here.
