A video showing former President Donald Trump and two serving U.S. Marines that aired at the 2020 Republican National Convention (RNC) has resurfaced amid controversy surrounding President Joe Biden's speech on Thursday.
Two uniformed members of the U.S. Marine Corps stood behind Biden as he delivered a prime time speech in Philadelphia where he described Trump and MAGA (Make America Great Again) Republicans as a threat to democracy.
The appearance of the two Marines quickly became the subject of criticism from some Republicans and media commentators who expressed concern that active duty personnel could be seen while Biden delivered a speech strongly criticizing political opponents.
Ron Filipkowksi, an ex-Republican lawyer who resigned from his position on a state judicial commission after a police raid on a former coronavirus data scientist, shared a video to Twitter on Friday that showed two uniformed marines opening a door for former President Trump and then saluting as he passed.

That drives the endorphins and gets people addicted to watching their networks.
That's why FOX always has that RED ALERT thing with the Pavlovian sounds to keep that runner's high going.

(16,786 posts)We are not that STUPID. But those who continue to vote Republican, have what we call here in Minnesota.."2 beers shy of a 6 pack" for brains.

(82,849 posts)And THAT qualifies as a "controversy" these days, huh?
President Biden called out the MAGA Republicans for exactly what they are, and instead of being all "Nuh uh" because they can't deny it, they're obsessing over meaningless minutiae. Luckily, the media are there to amplify the nonsense in ways they didn't for substantive criticisms of the former guy.

(7,263 posts)Those Marines emphasized that Joe is not just the President, but The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces as well.
Not so subtle hint.
And he was RIGHT to speak with them in the background. IT WAS NOT A MISTAKE.
It was a BRILLANT set design.
The RW pundits understand this - and that is what got their collective dander (ewwww) up.

(8,059 posts)in what was a political (not military-related) speech event. No matter which party's President is doing it. It's not proper. The military isn't affiliated with or owned by any President or political party. Commanded, but not affiliated.

(7,263 posts)And it is very effective messaging. I agree with using any ethical and moral means possible to defeat fascism in the USA.
The RW uses it all the time to appear strong.
FDR used it. Truman used it. Eisenhower used it. JFK used it. LBJ used it. Nixon used it. Ford used it. Carter used it. Raygun used it. HW Bush used it. Clinton used it. GW Bush used it (and a cod piece.) Obama used it. TFG used it. Biden uses it.
He was sending a message to those who want to use violence to destroy Democracy. The velvet glove carries a big stick.
Absolutely brilliant messaging. It hit the mark as the RW whining shows.

(8,059 posts)It's not a huge deal, however.
Not a mistake at all.

They had one of the largest militaries on the planet at least in the top 10 I believe.

(823 posts)They are very likely part of the crew that maintains the jet they are standing in front of. Two NCO's. I am sure they were requested to be there because they are in dress uniform and not their duty uniform.

(28,942 posts)It's the other way around. A Marine assigned to White House duty or even visits the WH, s/he always wears the 'Blues'. No doubt those two Marines are assigned to WH duty and the President told the officer in charge of them he wanted two of them present at the speech.
"Yes sir."
The Air Force personnel may not be a part of AF1's flight crew. More likely they're members of a unit at Joint Base Andrews AFB who do the ceremonial honors whenever a president or any official VIP arrives or leaves.

(28,942 posts)I don't recall the Magaoids having shit fits when tfg called the Marines of Belleau Wood "suckers and losers". Ya know, when he wouldn't go the ceremony at Belleau Wood because, wait for it, it was raining.
Fucking hypocrites.
