(57,465 posts)The list of ingredients for their ice cream ( not "frozen dairy products" ) is pretty short.
It's trademarked, so to stay on the legal side: Breyers®

(65,057 posts)Their definition of ultraprocessed seems amorphous.
I have a hard time believing that this can be held in isolation as a causal factor.
More than likely, it's interactive with several other contributing factors, like environment & genetic predisposition.
Ice cream is nothing new. Been around for centuries.
I feel the same about many others in that piece are likewise.
Joe Jackson wrote a song called "Everything Gives You Cancer". This kind of thing was what he was singing about.

(65,057 posts)BTW: Went last night to see a guy I've known since '72 of '73 do his cafe act.
He's always been an outstanding guitarist and was all I expected. He sings OK, but his voice pales in comparison to his playing.
His wife joins in on many, but not all sings. She tosses in some harmonies & played simple guitar on a few songs.
My wife bailed last minute (she knows him, too) so I have to track his FB page to see where they'll be so she can see them, too.

(8,712 posts)Ice cream with zero additives are out there. Also, making you own is easy too. Just throw some frozen fruit, sugar, cream and sometimes eggs into an ice cream maker.

(32,084 posts)I think that, much like the homemade vs. store-bought cookies, they're mainly referring to the ones that have a lot of crap in them, like high fructose or regular corn syrup, artificial flavorings, guar gum, carrageenan, modified food starch, etc. Don't scratch it off your list. Just read the ingredients. If they just contain only simple things, like cream, milk, sugar, and natural flavors, they're not "ultra-processed." Or, just make your own. That way, you get to control what goes into it. Unfortunately, most of the store-bought brands that fit the bill are a kind of expensive, like Ben and Jerry's, Alden's Organic, and Turkey Hill All Natural.
Ice cream is my guilty pleasure, as well. You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. And, since it's ice cream, my hands will be extra cold.

(48,993 posts)ignore the aisles of grocery stores as much as possible and focus on picking up fresh produce, meat and fish, and dairy. But that's more time-consuming and can be more expensive. My closest supermarket has filled the section between the fresh produce and fresh meat and fish with a bakery and bread aisle with lots of very heavily processed baked treats, but most of the time I can get through that health minefield without picking anything up. Then you get to the candy bars at checkout.

You can buy ice cream with a list of 30 ingredients or 4 or 5. Same with even processed foods.

(48,993 posts)because the ingredient list is short: cultured skim milk, cream, salt.
I still have the carton for another brand here (washed, those cartons are useful for stashing garbage like banana peels that I don't want smelling up the kitchen at all), one I bought when the store was out of 4% Daisy brand. Besides the ingredients found in Daisy cottage cheese, this other brand contains guar gum, whey protein concentrate, mono and diglycerides, carob bean gum, natural flavor, potassium sorbate and carbon dioxide (says it's to maintain freshness though Daisy cottage cheese doesn't need it), carrageenan (another thickener like the gums, and one possibly linked to cancer), polysorbate 80, and enzymes.
That "natural flavor" ingredient can be damn near anything:

It was really good! But filled with salt and I'm sure the noodles aren't the best for you.

(22,482 posts)fruits, like strawberries with pineapple and stick it in the blender with some ice, water and 1/2 and 1/2 (Because I had it on hand for coffee) and added some stevia.
It's delicious! Tastes just like a milkshake and besides the fat in the cream it is very healthy.
I might even get some heavy cream for this and just add more water.
