WASHINGTON The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee said Sunday he didn't personally agree with former President Donald Trump's decision to store classified documents at Mar-a-Lago but said presidents live by a "different set of rules."
"I have lived in the classified world most of my professional career, I personally wouldnt do that," Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said on ABC's This Week. "But I'm not the president of the United States. But he has a different set of rules that apply to him."
McCaul was referring to the broad power presidents have to declassify documents. Trump, whose Florida club was searched by the FBI last month, has asserted that he declassified the documents that agents found there. But others, including Trump's former attorney general, Bill Barr, say they find that explanation "unlikely."
"I know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen," McCaul said on Sunday. "He says he did. I dont have all the facts there."

(1,896 posts)The Supreme Court showed in United States v. Nixon in 1974 in United States v. Nixon that the president is *not* above the law, and not even this Extreme Court which has the deck heavily stacked in their favor, seems to go along with the Big Lie or the records on January 6.
He had the ability to declassify between January 20, 2017 and January 20, 2021, and even things (like nuclear secrets) he couldnt unilaterally declassify.
He is not president, and cannot declassify anything after 12 p.m. on January 20, 2021.
You would think somebody who was in the classified world and in Congress would know better. I guess not.

(22,130 posts)They should be treated and should act like the rest of us, obey the law, and such. These thugs are twisting and bending their bodies in order to come up w/ any scenario that would seemingly make sense for why tRUMP had these highly classified (and other docs) at MAL.
I personally think he was going to sell them and has already sold some.
