And I was an Atheist already. Why would an Atheist be an altar boy? Well, there was actually money in it. You see, Saturday was wedding and funeral day more often than not. And it was customary for the families involved to tip the altar boys. $5 was not unusual. In the 60s, when I got $1 for mowing a lawn, this was a gold mine.

Right, weddings and funeral days for sure.

The boys talked about the priest slipping them money from time to time as well.

Right $5 was a huge amount of money for a child to make at that time on a regular basis.
