2. British politics are so unusual

They had a prime minister who wasn’t great so they got rid of him. So now they are going for worse? Of course, they may just decide another election next year anyway. I’ve never seen a country turn over prime ministers as quickly as Britain does. Lately it seems like they have election after election.

Go figure.
Just watch that Asian money switch sides.
Interesting times ahead.

4. Johnson could have been in that seat for quite a while

(just my opinion) if he didn't have such an absolute propensity for self destruction. Meaning the seats and political backing were there .. if the man himself wasn't such a cock-up.

of course she plans to cut taxes to "help business." How long until she tries to privatize the NHS? Also a big need for energy assistance.

21. The rumoured change is increasing the threshold for higher tax from about £50k to 80k

https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/liz-truss-considers-cutting-taxes-for-top-10-of-earners-by-raising-tax-threshold-to-80000-1832740

(all British income tax is done as individuals, not as couples/households, by the way)
At the moment, the rate is 0% on the first £12,570, 20% from that up to £50,270, and 40% above that (and 45% above a higher-still figure). So this gives £6,000 to those above £80k, and a sliding amount extra between 0 and £6k to those between 50 and 80k.

These are, of course, not the people struggling with inflation and huge utility charges. She thinks this 'trickle-down' stuff helps the economy grow, but most economists dispute that, and all agree it couldn't have an effect for some time. It's either delusional (a word used quite often for her), or just pandering to the typical Tory member who was voting her in. Sunak was seen as more realistic in his economic proposals, but that doesn't get you far with right wing members, as the USA also shows.

6. Thatcher wasn't that bad for the time

It's complicated. Thatcher and Lech Wałęsa were conservative but not extreme, and very needed. It was a different world and they succeeded to change the world.

I'm just having a hard time pounding that one into shape. Like - in the sense that Ronald Reagan doesn't look so 'extreme' in retrospect - when stacked up against Trump and DeSantis?

I certainly never saw Reagan as 'necessary' - for any sort of positive developments that ensued over the past 40 years ... Not quite as familiar with Thatcher and agenda ...

18. Thatcher had luck with her election opponents
Mon Sep 5, 2022, 07:52 AM
Sep 2022

With incompetent ideologues like Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock as opponents in the general elections, she couldn't help but coast to victory. If she had faced candidates such as Walter Mondale or Mike Dukakis, she might not have had such an easy time with her elections as PM.
