I mean, I can't for the life of me imagine anyone not seeing how fucking stupid this is, I can't imagine how he thought he could possibly get away with this, but the fact is, not only did he hang onto another country's classified info, he lied about it. There isn't a non-nefarious reason to do that. He could have returned it with an oops, I didn't know that was in there, but he didn't even do that. He lied about having it and he obstructed and lied about keeping it. He was risking a hell of a lot to hang onto it. For what purpose?

And everyone else who was involved is looking at serious criminal charges as well. There's no way he did this on his own, so everyone involved is in a heap of shit.

How in the world did he think he was going to get away with this?

The good thing (?) is that only a very, very limited number of people are even authorized to look at such material, so that should narrow down the conspirator list pretty easily.
