It's like I can hang out with 500 of the smartest people I know....some of who are enjoying the moment with life enhancements; just like me. Talking in real time, commenting on reality. And the trip has gotten a shitload stranger than it was 50 years ago....
Thanks all! You keep me sane. Or, it's a damn cost-effective group therapy.

(24,504 posts)Thanks to MIR and folks willing to self-regulate a discussion board....you get maybe the best place for latest breaking news and opinion/comment.
When you have a whole bunch of people reading various websites and posting info - minute by minute - you have an awesome place to keep real time tabs on what is happening. Really, like no other major media website.
Then, of course, you have Music Appreciation......

(24,504 posts)Probably spent the whole night drinking and reading du. Maybe smoking pot, though. I was "Old and In the Way" back in my original manifestation. Because I was listening to "Old and In the Way" by "Old and In the Way" when I did the sign up thing.
What's really fascinating is that I only had 37,540 posts thru 11/8/2016 (13 years). That's when the Russians/GOP shut the site down and forced new names/passwords. Part of their election interference plan, I am sure.
Now, I've got 15,000+ under my current moniker since 12/7/2017 (5 years)....guess I have more opinions to share.

(4,673 posts)wasnt a star member then. Even as a newbie, I was lost and distraught those days without DU, hyperventilating with friends in the wilderness.
Did you have to change your name/password because of being a star? I dont recall needing to do that, but it is when I became a star member!

(24,504 posts)Have a white Oak I planted in the perfect place, by my log home that I built in 1998. Found it growing off the road up to the house, a splendid specimen....it's now got a ~ 14" butt and it's approx. 45* ft tall - straight and true. Friggen gray squirrels are molesting the tree for acorns. Lots of leaves and branches on the ground, because of these varmints.
Then I think....maybe the squirrels are killing suckers and clusters that need trimming....maybe the squirrels are smarter about oak tree management than I am.
On edit, closer to 40'. I tend to have a liberal measurement when it comes to personnel things.

(33,349 posts)It was growing in a very steep, deep ravine with limited sunlight. The growth rings were very narrow and densely packed. I cut most of it into 1-1/4 inch thick boards and hope, after drying and planing, to end up with 1 inch.
Hope yours is not suffering any disease exacerbated by climate change.

(24,504 posts)No rot issues, plenty of water during spring run-off from the hill behind it. Morning sun - less direct sunlight, then evening sun. The tree is pretty healthy. Been doing proper branch cuts for 15 years and the skin is disappearing the cuts. A proper oak tree that will get better with age.

One must be over 100 years old, probably more.
What are proper branch cuts? Id really like to take care of this tree.
OAITW r.2.0
(24,504 posts)trunk bark. Done properly, the tree will bark will reclaim the branch area to minimize insect and weather damage.

(3,111 posts)Since the appointment of Shrub by SCOTUS, I've been coming here for sanctuary, and to see what the sane people are thinking about the news of the day. I love the Lounge where things are light and goofy. I depend on LBN when the news cycle is crazy, which is always lately. Liberal politics always, but also Music Appreciation, recipes, photography contests, wild science factoids and nature discoveries, animal memes... and great, smart, caring people. What could be better?
Though I wouldn't recognize hardly any of you in the grocery store, I consider you all friends and neighbors--well almost all. In short, I love this place too!! Thanks for being here!

(10,156 posts)Its basically just whenever trans issues get posted here. There is always something or someone to cause a problem over it. Despite overtime that we had new rules implemented by Earl for this problem

(4,170 posts)I just read another post by you where you throw the b word around quite a bit. And you imply the c word.
This is misogynistic, but somehow ok with you? SMH.
vercetti2021
(10,156 posts)But I have to be nice with words because of a person that labels us to get us fucking killed. Do you not understand how frustrated and angry we are that we have no fucking support and its obvious here on DU now. It has been for a long time and I thought it was finally handled and taken care of. But yet another method has seeped in to once again play down transgender individuals.
Treefrog
(4,170 posts)people slinging the b word around. Or the c word.
It's offensive. Surely you know that?
vercetti2021
(10,156 posts)I'm called a bitch and a C quite often by people. I don't let it bother me, I try to not let it.
As a trans woman I never knew how shit would be this hard. So it does get frustrating and upsetting to toss out words when you're beyond the point of tired. I have a huge deck stacked against people like me. I come here for comfort, but somedays I can't find it.
Treefrog
(4,170 posts)Sorry it's so hard for you here.
I find DUers on the whole to be good people. I dislike name calling, no matter who does it.
vercetti2021
(10,156 posts)Just seeing all the disdain and carelessness just takes a toll on someone. I just wanted to be happy and be me, but I never expected the amount of hate just from all directions. I don't like getting angry and feel like I have to get mad to make a point, I hate being mad or upset. But it just gets so overwhelming now. I feel like I made a mistake because people choose to not let you feel happiness even for a second. They point at you for having a mental illness or you're a sick pervert. I'm taking my frustrations out on the wrong place. I need to self delete my post all together.
BannonsLiver
(16,387 posts)Especially when you have done NOTHING wrong. Also dont let them gaslight you into believing you using a couple of words nobody in the outside world finds offensive but has been deemed offensive by the middle school student council president types rises to the level of how you and others like you have been treated here or elsewhere.
Treefrog
(4,170 posts)Please point out a bullying comment.
And people in "the outside world" as you call it do indeed find the b word and the c word to be offensive when flung at women.
Gotta give you credit here for most creative insult ever though! "The middle school student council president type". That did make me laugh out loud.
Unfortunately middle school is far in my past, and I have no memory of any of those. Were they cruel to you? I'm so sorry.
BannonsLiver
(16,387 posts)Good luck, Also, The idea that you having to hear those words here or anywhere else rises to the level of what trans people deal with is ludicrous. You should probably rethink that.
Treefrog
(4,170 posts)YOU call ME a bully and then accuse me of trying to intimidate YOU?
Alrighty then.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)Really confused about this one.
vercetti2021
(10,156 posts)Like it takes a lot of talking points from the right wing that freedom of speech applies to private enterprise. Basically that people who want that place taken down is violating freedom of speech and basically disregarding the fact they've gotten people to commit suicide, and currently stalking a trans woman across the world right now trying to actively get her killed or to commit suicide. And members here are basically disregarding that because of freedom of speech. Its a huge slap to the face to our community when we are heavily scrutinized and targeted now, shit like this doesn't help us.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)I didnt see any transphobia on that posters part, I really dont see that; hes making a different argument altogether.
It IS a discussion board.
vercetti2021
(10,156 posts)The fact that this place is actively hurting people and stalking a trans woman and no one is taking that into any consideration. We are just tired of it.

internet was not in existence back in 87 more or less.
That photo almost looks like the teletype we used to communicate long distance; the dawn of the "chat" that would take over the world.
LOL. we Would send a msg and wait quite sometime and watch, slowly mesmerized by instant letters, then words, then full attempts at real time communication slowly populate lines and long distance ideas on the screen. It certainly obliterated the telegrams and expensive long distance phone calls over the following few years.
on edit: I might add long distance landline phone calls
