MA-Gov: Trump-backed challenger Geoff Diehl wins GOP governor nomination, AP projects

Massachusetts primary results: Trump-backed challenger wins GOP governor nomination, AP projects

BY CAROLINE LINTON
UPDATED ON: SEPTEMBER 6, 2022 / 11:31 PM / CBS NEWS

The Associated Press projected Geoff Diehl, who was backed by former President Donald Trump, has won the Republican nomination for governor in Massachusetts. He will face Maura Healey, who the AP projected earlier won the Democratic contest, in November.

Massachusetts is one of the Democrats' best chances at flipping a governor's mansion, since moderate Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is not running for reelection.

Diehl defeated businessman Chris Doughty, a political newcomer, and had been backed by neighboring New Hampshire's moderate Republican Gov. Chris Sununu.

Baker, who refused to vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020, did not endorse either candidate.

2. 2022 is a good year to nominate unelectable MAGAts

Particularly in blue states such as MA that occasionally elect moderate Republicans, otherwise known as "RINOs" in MAGA-GOP circles. Flipping blue is always good, and the "semi-" fascists who have overtaken the Republican party are helping to bring it about, even if unwittingly.

I shake my head in utter amazement. I just don't understand that level of stupidity.

He will lose badly though. Maura Healey was/is an extremely well liked and competent AG. It will be a wipe out.

Funny... after the 2020 election, a GOP acquaintance said to me, "I don't get it--I don't know anyone here in the state that would have voted for Biden!"

So, yeah, they're "stupido" enough to support the MAGA movement, but also stupid enough to not realize that their own personal experience is not the statewide norm.

Especially in the house. Even with a democratic majority, those MAGA Congresspersons will be a pain in the ass for nancy.

7. MA doesn't often get a GOP Governor, and when they do

it's usually moderate GOPer. (Weld, Baker).

So.... how STUPID are they to nominate Diehl?

Doughty didn't have a chance against Healy either, but Diehl?

Massachusetts--the single, solitary state to vote against Nixon in '72.

9. Don't forget Mittens. Repubs have been governor 24 of the last 32 years.

Weld, Celucci , Swift , Romney and Baker. Fortunately, Democrats hold a veto-proof majority in the legislature.

Romney campaigned as a moderate reformer in 2002. He then tried to govern like an eventual GOP presidential candidate.

Diehl should be unelectable, but don't underestimate the incompetence of the Mass. Democratic Party.

In the past 100 years, Massachusetts had 20 Republican Governors to 13 Democratic Governors.

In the past 54 years (1969 - 2023) Massachusetts had 6 Republican Governors to 3 Democratic Governors. Of those 3, Michael Dukakis served 2, 4 year terms non- consecutively so really only 2 Dems.

In the past 22 years (2001 - 2023) 3 R's and one D.

Hopefully Democrat Maura Healey will defeat Trump backed Republican Geoff Diehl in November.
