https://www.newsweek.com/russian-officials-propose-overthrowing-putin-charging-treason-1741085"A group of Russian officials has appealed to the country's State Duma to remove President Vladimir Putin from power on the charge of high treason, a document shared by one of the Russian deputies who co-signed the proposal reveals.
In a tweet published on Wednesday by Nikita Yurefev, a municipal deputy for Smolninskoe in St. Petersburg, the official wrote that the Council of the Smolninskoye Municipal District "sent a proposal to the State Duma demanding to remove Putin from office based on the charges of high treason."
The treason charge appears to be directly related to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which in Russia is still referred to as a "special military operation" by the Kremlin and its propaganda machine.
"His decision to start the Special Military Operation led to 1) deaths of the Russian servicemen, 2) problems in the Russian economy, 3) the expansion of NATO (the border with NATO has doubled!," a translation of Yurefev's tweet read.
The list of complaints against the Russian president continues in a follow-up tweet.
"Ukraine is militarizing and has received $38 billion worth of weapons to fight Russia. All these are the consequences of the decision to start the Special Military Operation. Putin's actions pose a threat to Russia's security. He should be fired! Adopted at a meeting of the Municipal Council of Smolninskoye."

Joking aside, Putin is still VERY popular in Russia despite what you would want to hear. Deposing him would not be easy and anyone taking his spot would be viewed as a western USA lackey at best and puppet at worst. His days would be numbered.
The Putin is gravely ill, about to be deposed, is out of troops (despite still holding war games in Belarus and the Far East jointly with several other countries), buying ammunition from NK....the propaganda on our side really is starting to look ridiculous.
But I get, have to keep up the appearances or the public will tire of it.

Better question: Why should we believe you?

(16,543 posts)His popularity has no bearing, imo. Wasn't Hitler still popular with the German people when his generals started conspiring to bump him off? It's the insiders who are the first to realize how bad things really are, especially when there's no free press. In Russia, the average citizen only knows what the Putin-controlled media tells them. Only people like these officials are in a position to know just how bad he's fucking up.

(4,366 posts)It was only when those around him realized he led them down the path of self-destruction that they turned on him. Time will tell about Pooty.
Same news sources said stated we would be greeted as liberators in Iraq, etc. And that the war was over. Yeah, that didn't turn out so well. The same news media that helped fan the flames of impeachment of Bill Clinton because he got a blow job and lied about it, maybe he broke the "man-code" in which you are supposed to brag.
You should be asking why something that sensitive is being put in print here in the USA for every Russian spy and their allies to read? Or shit, read it right there in Russia. That article, if it was true, just outed the conspiracy. Hence, I'm of the opinion, its not legit and is designed to create paranoia.
As for Newsweek, I was always of the opinion they were legitimate, but I have noticed a few here at DU starting to question them, I always dismissed them. Now, not so sure if I should.
As for believing me, don't have to, nor do I care. But this is a discussion board and you are going to hear views that you don't agree with.

(15,265 posts)has increased its membership and the war is aldldo costing a lot of Russian "blood and treasure" and inflicting some major harm to their economy. Those surrounding Putin may overcome their fear and stop kissing his ass gecause ending the war would almost certainly be a better path for them to take.

(6,406 posts)For now.
This isn't checkers and what may be true today isn't absolute. The real question is five, ten, etc. years down the road.
Twenty two years ago, China was still a backward nation using wagons and Russia's proud sub fleet of the Soviet Union was mostly docked due to no funds to maintain it. Funny how all that changed in a very short period.
And again, as I posted in another reply, why on earth would you reveal your plans to a western publication where everyone in Russia and her spies can read? You just blew the conspiracy wide open. Hence, I don't see it plausible, could be someone blowing smoke up some reporters ass.
