Aileen Cannon, a 38 year-old lawyer with no judicial experience and limited resume - LIFETIME appt.

Aileen Cannon, a 38 year-old lawyer with no judicial experience and limited resume, was handed a LIFETIME appointment as a federal judge just as Trump left office. Cannon's primary credentials for the job were apparently her young age and membership in the Federalist Society. 1/5

Her professional experience was so limited that she was forced to admit on her Sen Judiciary Comm questionnaire that she had never made any speeches, produced any reports, participated in any panel discussions, spoke at any conferences or written for any bar association. 2/5

In her twelve years as a lawyer, she published no writings of her own and just 3 writings done with colleagues at Gibson Dunn -- limited to promotional articles on cases handled by the firm for their own website. 3/5

In an attempt to show writing experience, Cannon listed 17 short articles from a 2-mo undergrad stint at El Nuevo Herald. ranging from "Prenatal Yoga" to "Flamenco: An Explosion of Energy and Passion." Cannon is unclear on whether she authored or simply edited the articles. 4/5

Finally, the questionnaire for a LIFETIME judicial appt asks Cannon to list all interviews she has given to the media. Cannon lists only her wedding article in a local magazine as her only media experience.(5/5)

Citizenship Requirements for Employment in the Judiciary

Current appropriations law prohibits the use of appropriated funds to pay the compensation of any employee of the U.S. federal government where the duty location is in the continental U.S. unless such person is a:

1. U.S. citizen;

2. person who owes allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., nationals of American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Northern Mariana Islands, and nationals who meet other requirements described in 8 U.S.C. 1408 (link is external));

3. person admitted as a refugee or granted asylum who has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or

4. lawful permanent resident who is seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B).

Did not see anything on the questionnaire that addresses citizenship. The link I provided above says if she wasn't a US citizen she wouldn't be paid by the government. I will also assume that we would have heard about it if Trump was nominating a foreign citizen to a lifetime seat on the federal bench.

She also clerked for a federal judge and:

Do I Need to Be a U.S. Citizen to Clerk?
Citizenship Information: Federal Courts

Under federal law, most non-citizens cannot clerk for federal judges in the continental United States. That prohibition does not extend to federal courts outside of the continental U.S., namely federal courts in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Those are all assumptions. I just think it's unlikely that she's come this far without obtaining citizenship.

do it more often.

IMO, too many President Biden's judicial appointees, are in their mid 50s. District court judges are often elevated to appellate court positions and thus we end up with older appeals court judges as well. We need appointees that might well be on the courts for the next 40 years.

we're her young age and her membership in the Federalist Society.

I'd imagine she's a catholic as well, although I could find no membership information about Opus Dei. She has "future Supreme Court Justice" written all over her.

Mitch cozied up to depraved Donnie for two reasons: (1) pack the courts with extremist judges...deep six abortion rights, same sex marriage, Obamacare (2) the tax cut...a gift to to ultra wealthy..

We deserve to know who is packing our courts with unqualified judges on lifetime appointments.
Another thought- Do these wingnut judges take an oath to Federalist? If so, how does that oath conflict with their oath of office?

Frighteningly enough Leonard Leo just got a 1.6 billion dollar donation for Heritage Foundation and other wingnut groups

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/08/leonard-leo-billion-donation-real-problem.html

On Monday, the New York Times broke the news that last year conservative mastermind Leonard Leo had obtained control over $1.6 billion through something called the “Marble Freedom Trust” to further his deeply conservative political and legal agenda. While much of the follow up reporting so far has focused on the unusual but apparently legal means by which the donor of the money—an elderly electronics magnate named Barre Seid—structured the transaction to avoid paying at least $400 million in taxes, the longer-term implications for a democracy as we understand it in America are far more dire
