According to MSNBC political analyst Steve Benen, Donald Trump's over-the top-response to the Department of Justice's proposal to Judge Aileen Cannon that she stay portions of her special master ruling on sensitive documents the former president took with him to Mar-a-Lago reveals there is a rift between the former president and his attorneys who remained oddly silent after the filing.
Late Thursday, the DOJ asked the Trump-appointed judge for a "partial stay pending appeal on Cannon's order, saying that the intelligence community's review 'cannot be readily segregated from the Department of Justices and Federal Bureau of Investigations activities in connection with the ongoing criminal investigation,'" reported Axios.
The filing stated, "the government and the public are irreparably injured when a criminal investigation of matters involving risks to national security is enjoined," before adding, "The government and the public would suffer irreparable harm absent a stay."
That filing led to a blast from the former president on his Truth Social platform where he wrote about the FBI, "They leak, lie, plant fake evidence, allow the spying on my campaign, deceive the FISA Court, RAID and Break-Into my home, lose documents, and then they ask me, as the 45th President of the United States, to trust them. Look at the I.G. Reports on Comey, McCabe, and others. Things are safer in the middle of Central Park!"

(53,791 posts)to get his way and it's worked for years. He uses the courts as a vehicle, and his old man's money (some that he stole from his brother's estate, Mary Trump's father) to keep it going and he's parlayed his whole MO into scheme after scam after scheme, even through Putin/Russia to where he is now.
He's incapable of changing. It's who his evil self is. This complicit Judge Cannon is doing her part to prolong this case but it's too obvious what he did with the stolen docs, some nuclear even, for him to slither out of this hot mess.
He's going to face some consequences for this, even if it takes months, even year as it winds it's way through to a resolution.

(47,131 posts)The police are out to get me.
They planted the evidence.
So on and so forth.
But we can also guess that all of Trump's accusations are things he has himself done to others.
But yes as he gets more unhinged he could be just spit balling from some old movie he saw years ago.

(2,977 posts)And until now it wasn't public. He wouldn't mention it if it was pertaining to something else, especially that long ago.

(9,670 posts)All the other items in his rant were regarding the "raid" on MAL and personal to Trump. Why would he refer to something that happened years ago to someone else he probably doesn't even remember?
That begs the question, though: if a FISA court signed off on surveilling Trump, which I've believed to have happened a long time ago and which answers the question "why is DOJ working so slowly and methodically when national security is in jeopardy every day this man walks free?"...
...how did Trump become aware of it? The target isn't supposed to know.
On edit: he does refer to his campaign in his diatribe so perhaps this does harken back to Carter Page, but it's hard to tell when you're dealing with this cretin.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)And I see his rant as him just throwing feces at the wall to see what sticks.
I'd bet he remembers Carter Page's sitch quite well as it was closely linked to RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA, and the most important part in his mind would be ... there was something questionable on some of the FISA warrants which FBI was called out for.
Remember how obsessed he was with showing the investigation overall was 'unfair'? This decision against the FBI would've stuck in his mind even if he wouldn't know Carter Page walking down the street, methinks.
Mr. Ected
(9,670 posts)I bet before the Carter Page incident he'd never even heard of the FISA court.
All that being said, I feel almost certain that another FISA court warrant has been sworn out against Trump. The danger he poses to national security is boundless and ongoing, and all partisanship aside, I can't imagine that we would suspend the protection of our people and our secrets because of his "base". That's ludicrous.
Irish_Dem
(47,131 posts)But he does mention "spying on my campaign" which is connected to the Carter Paige and FISA?
So I guess that would make some sense.
If it is as you suggest about FISA signing off on Trump surveillance, and your question how would Trump know?
Easy to answer, we know there are Trump loyalists everywhere, serving at high level positions throughout government.

(32,086 posts)I would not be surprised if he's blurting out something that will eventually come around and bite him in the ass. It wouldn't be the first time. Just look at the whole search warrant/affidavit fiasco. He was the one out there blabbing about it.

(145,321 posts)TFG keeps floating the declassification argument but none of his attorneys have used this stupid claim in court either in oral arguments or in any filling or brief. The DOJ filing is going to force TFG's attorneys to take a position on the concept that TFG magically misclassified the materials

The hundreds of pages of classified government records seized from Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago estate last month arent the former presidents personal records, and he has no right to possess them, the Justice Department said in a court filing Thursday as it said the government would appeal a judges ruling on the matter.
......But just as notably, Trump once again added that federal law enforcement officials plant fake evidence a bizarre claim that the former president embraced, then abandoned, and then re-embraced.
Its all quite unhinged, but the biggest tell is the lingering gap between Trump and his own lawyers. On his social media platform, the Republican pushes creative nonsense about planted evidence and declassifying materials, but in court, his attorneys realize that they cant get away with peddling garbage.
And therein lies the rub: We know the former presidents defenses arent real because even his lawyers won't endorse them
TFG's attorney will need to explain how TFG has possession of these documents and either adopt or reject the crazy arguments that TFG has been using
