Putin calls for Calm, De-escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Russia has peacekeeping troops in the Azeri-Armenian conflict zone as guarantor of an agreement that ended a six-week war two years ago over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“It is difficult to overestimate the role of the Russian Federation, the role of Putin personally,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “The president is naturally making every effort to help de-escalate tensions at the border.”

Russia’s war in Ukraine has undermined its status as a regional security guarantor, leaving room for Azerbaijan to make more claims, said Laurence Broers, associate fellow at the Russia and Eurasia program of Chatham House think tank.

Russia’s foreign ministry said the conflict “should be resolved exclusively through political and diplomatic means.”

region of Nagano-Kharabak in 2020 routed a more "powerful-seeming" Armenian forces.

It was a preview of the war being fought in Ukraine.

The Armenians (standing in for the Russians as a military analogy) had heavy weapons like tanks and artillery, although dissimilarly they were defending held ground. They dominated.

But the Azeris turned to drones. They sacrificed their Russian made drones to expose Armenian anti-aircraft batteries, then they wipe those out with Turkish Bayraktar drones (as UKR uses) and the original Israeli drones upon which the Bayraktar drones are based.

The Azeris wiped out anti-aircraft, artillery, and tanks. Then began a broad advance.

Putin--a nominal "ally" of both--stopped the conflict, saving much of the ethnic Armenian enclave from Azeri control.

Otherwise, it looked like a rout was about to take place.

It really was a preview of this war in UKR in many ways.

As the OP suggests, this is not a stable region and the Azeris feel they were cheated out of a "win." If Putin is too busy/ehaused to stop it (and he is), a conflict could very well break out.

It seems if Putin has a an ounce of virtue left in him, he would give up entirely in Ukraine and stop this likely shit show from taking off. But we all know he doesn't. And it seems like it could spell more danger for the stability of his regime.

losing the war just make up some excuse to make himself look good by saying he needed to sacrifice to help bring peace in the Azerbaijan Armenian area.
