We have heard that many, many times.
But, with Merrick Garland, I wonder if it has more value?
He was going to be on the Supreme Court, but the under-rated fascist, Mitch McConnell, prevented him from getting a vote. Then McConnell went on to stack the Court with Trump nominees, chosen by the Federalist Society. Merrick Garland did not make it to the Supreme Court.
But, where would we be if he had made it to the Supreme Court? How much influence would he have had with the right-wing extremists now running the Court?
Instead, he was chosen to be the Attorney-General for Joe Biden's Administration. History has put him in a position that could possibly dictate whether our democracy lives or dies? He has been placed in a more important position than Supreme Court Justice.
He has shown extreme patience and courage in his bid to hold accountable those that attacked our nation's Capitol. In the interim, he is in the middle of a battle to retrieve national security documents stolen by the former president and taken to his country club in Florida.
He has repeatedly stated his intent to follow the law wherever it goes. More people now believe that he is deadly serious about it. History has called him to help save American democracy and he appears prepared to do the job.
People were angry that he was not chosen for the Supreme Court but it now looks like he was chosen for a bigger job.

(36,540 posts)but I suspect the 60-day election rule will keep anything from being done, cuz you know, who wouldn't want criminals running for the highest office of a state while innocent people's lives are being fucked with?

(6,573 posts)but now, because of Cannon's obstruction, there is nothing we can do, unless the 11th Circuit overturns her ruling, and turns Garland loose. Then, we might see something.

I will go for 'serendipity.'
And state for the record that Garland is a better man/public servant/human being - than a number of those now seated on the court.

I don't think either belief is superior to the other and I would not criticize either of them.

(6,573 posts)No matter how you say it or what you believe, we are damned fortunate that he didn't end up on the corrupted SC, and instead is working for the take down of the Orange Turd. Biden is to be commended for appointing him. We are in disagreement about the timing, but I for one am not worried that he will turn out to be a Trumper.

(43,364 posts)He is showing a deep understanding of the history of the law as it has evolved over the last 160 years as well as political influences that have tugged enforcement and legal theories this way and that. Garland has been given full reign of our legal system, the structure that defines how conflict is resolved in our society. He is Joe Biden's most important appointment.

(32,097 posts)Of course it does. It's basic physics. Every action has a reaction. Merrick Garland as AG is the unintended consequence of Mitch McConnell's fuckery, not some sort of supernatural manipulation.

(9,672 posts)I still think he's having to stave off Trump allies stashed at the DOJ who undermine and slow the process down. He's had to quietly deal with that enemy within while the co-conspirators openly and brazenly cover up their crimes while continuing to commit others.
