Migrants DeSantis flew to Marthas Vineyard were conned
Judd Legum of Popular Information this morning has documentary evidence that migrants from Venezuela were provided with false information to convince them to board flights chartered by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R). The documents suggest that the flights were not just a callous political stunt but potentially a crime.
They were provided with a phony brochure touting benefits theyd receive in Massachusetts. Their applications for asylum in progress, they were legally allowed to travel within the United States. Some were told they would get expedited work permits in Boston if they boarded the planes DeSantis sent to Texas to fetch them:
DeSantis has been adamant that the migrants were not misled. He claims that migrants were provided with a map showing the destination was Marthas Vineyard and describes the flights as all voluntary. Appearing on Fox News on Sunday Morning, Florida Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez (R) called allegations that the migrants were misled categorically false.
Popular Information, however, has obtained a brochure that was provided to the migrants who ultimately agreed to the flights. It was provided to Popular Information by Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR), a Boston-based legal organization that represents 30 of the migrants. The brochure says that migrants who arrive in Massachusetts will be eligible for numerous benefits, including 8 months cash assistance, assistance with housing, food, clothing, transportation to job interviews, job training, job placement, registering children for school, assistance applying for Social Security cards, and many other benefits.
None of this, however, is true.
See above.
The migrants who boarded the planes absolutely do not have access to cash, housing, and other resettlement benefits which are provided through both federal funds and partnerships with faith-based [organizations], Cameron said.

Show us the map. Some one of the 'relocated' must have the map that waas provided.
De Santis certainly has one available; perhaps still wet off the printer.

(36,458 posts)Thats what Will Bodine, who created the design two years ago, wants to know.
By Spencer Buell Globe Staff,
Updated September 21, 2022, 2:45 p.m.
Will Bodine hadnt given his redesign of the Massachusetts state flag much thought in a while.
Two summers ago, he whipped up the image in upwards of 10 minutes on his computer. The concept was simple: a blue shield emblazoned with the official state flower the mayflower encircled by six blue stars, all splashed against a white backdrop.
Bodine, who lives in Pittsfield, showed it to a few friends and shared it on Facebook. He also uploaded it to Imgur, an image-hosting website, where, until recently, it had only been viewed a few times.
Not officially or anything, he wrote. I just think the current one [expletive] so I made this one featuring the state flower.
So on Tuesday, it came as a complete surprise when Bodine learned his reimagined design was embroiled in the national controversy involving Venezuelan migrants flown to Marthas Vineyard unannounced last week.

(302 posts)DeSantis is a lawyer but he keeps doing things which are clearly illegal, such as breaking the state's 50 plus year old contract with Disneyworld without cause, passing laws which violate the First Amendment and now committing outright fraud. So he cannot claim ignorance of the law.

And by 2024 they may have complete control of elections after SC rules on NC legislature electors case. Our best hope, kick asses in 2022 and fix the voting destruction. Or we may Have President DeSatan and VP Green.

Trumps last "rally", he outright declared the DOJ, and FBI, and Biden, and Dems were all in a conspiracy against him and the Republicans.
If I were in the FBI or DOJ, I would fear doing anything to Trump or his Minions, because it would be the "shot heard round the world" to the Trumphumpers to break loose across the entire U.S. at every state capital.......

(50,562 posts)Look at the folds. If a print shop had done this, it would have been folded in one of two ways. If the paper is thin enough it can be put in a folding machine that gives a nice clean line all the way down the sheet. If its a thicker stock it would have been scored first and then folded. This sheet was bent over and pinched together with fingers. You can see it.
The cheap crappy clip art and the squished lighthouse photo, the God-awful typography and the fact its not on glossy paper are also giveaways. State agencies LOVE 80-pound enamel text paper; this is like the stuff you get at Staples.
This thing just absolutely screams I was done in Microsoft Publisher and printed on the office copier!

(50,562 posts)If a real designer would have done this, the whole thing would be in one language. You wouldn't have one panel with English text and one with Spanish; the whole trifold would be in Spanish and only Spanish. This is because you'd have a brochure in Spanish, one in Portuguese for Brazilians, one in Chinese, one in Korean, one in Russian...
BumRushDaShow
(129,362 posts)That is a "home made" printed thing on some inkjet printer on cheap paper (not even worthy of a color laserjet). Might have been done on 8 x 14" paper to provide 4.5" wide columns for the folds (leaving 1/2" total overlap of the ends of 1/4" on each end).
jmowreader
(50,562 posts)that the state offices wherever this was done have multifunction copiers like the one we have at work. Mine has copier, fax and printer capability, does double sided print on fairly thick stock, and prints double sided. Its a laser printer.
BumRushDaShow
(129,362 posts)I have a HP Officejet Pro (inkjet) printer/copier/scanner/fax machine that does the same - 50-sheet feeder, 2-sided printing, plus thick stock, and photo paper (various sizes and finishes - whether matte or shiny), and it's not even a laser printer.
That faded/blotchy printing of the image of the state of Massachusetts looks inkjet-like as if the ink cartridges were starting to run out and/or there was a need to clean the print heads!

(19,566 posts)That's a pivotal question. The brochure provided matches verbal information given to the Venezuelan migrants seeking asylum and yet clearly states it's for refugees.
If you go to the mass.gov website and look at the ORI section you can find this:
Additional services available to refugees resettled in Massachusetts
Reception and Placement Services (funded through the United States Department of State directly with resettlement agencies (a.k.a. voluntary agencies (volags)) facilitates the placement of refugees in the United States for resettlement.
During the first 90 days after a refugee's arrival in Massachusetts, resettlement agencies provide basic needs support including:
assistance with housing
furnishings
food and other basic necessities
clothing, and
transportation to job interviews and job training
assistance in applying for social security cards
registering children for school
using public transportation, facilities, and services
community and cultural orientation
Matching Grant Program (funded through the Office of Refugee Resettlement) - The Match Grant Program is a public/private partnership between a resettlement agency and the Office of Refugee Resettlement under which refugee resettlement costs are shared by the government and a local community. Resettlement agencies who resettle refugees under the Match Grant Program provide cash assistance and in-kind support for refugees for an additional 90 days beyond the normal 30-day period for Reception and Placement assistance.
https://www.mass.gov/service-details/other-benefits-available-to-refugees
Which has me wondering if they deliberately handed out real brochures for an entirely different process to these migrants?
LeftInTX
(25,515 posts)Additionally, I highly doubt that a refugee settlement brochure would include kitschy clip art.
The state does have emergency info brochures. They don't have them in Spanish, but I downloaded one in French.
The only word I recognized was blizzard..It instructs refugees on basic safety precautions that one needs to take etc.
The Arabic brochure is available as a PDF

(19,566 posts)They manufactured the fake brochure and used it as a tool to lie to the migrants then.
I'm not surprised, but also I wouldn't have been surprised to learn they used a real government brochure in a misleading fashion.

(111,328 posts)which should have displayed their profound ignorance but which other ignorant people took as absolute fact. It is not.
However, that's one thing that is at work here, the ignorance and acceptance of lies as fact by weak minded people. That's who designed this brochure. You'd have to prove they knew better, and that's a tall order for Texans, especially.
The toxic stew of ignorance, lies, hate, and racism, all amplified by toadlike governors, won't stop until it is stopped, preferably by levying human trafficking charges against both Abbott and De Satan. Otherwise, they'll keep on doing it over and over again because that's how RWNJs roll.
