I'm streaming the Holocaust on PBS and they are showing all the right wing groups that sprung up in the thirties. They make me think of MAGA.

(47,302 posts)Interesting because I am a realist, cynic and WWII buff.
I already know most of what is being presented.
But it is bringing in a bit of new information for me.
And connecting dots.
The emotionality is once again at the forefront.
Showing us that mankind has not changed one iota over time.
Maybe Mother Earth has the right idea.
Smother us in our beds.

I agree with the historian who said she doesn't think Anne Frank, had she survived, would have still thought people are basically good.
There are a couple of 1 hour each discussion segments about the documentary. Added depth, though not as good as the actual documentary. They're listed under specials on PBS - both titles will let you know they deal with the series.

(47,302 posts)Can you believe iconic humanistic literature banned?
I am only on Ep One. So they just touched on Anne Frank briefly.
I agree, how could Anne think of humans as basically good.
She didn't see it.
I will look for the discussion segments too.

(90,779 posts)Yes, I can believe people who would deny history would want it banned.
The denial of the existence of others, of ideas viewed as the enemy to the desired way of thinking, will also bring about book bans.
To rid society of those some people deem undesirable would also lead to book bans.
When you create a narrative of who you are and what kind of society you have, one that tells a lie, one that denies the truth, one that needs constant fluffing, then you have to rid all evidence to the contrary. Books, art, even buildings...and, of course, people.
Can't really kill an idea, you have to kill those who hold those ideas, and ban all evidence of those ideas. Discourage those ideas by criminalizing them and punishing those who voice them.

I think Burns is making an important point here.

I just finished reading it; it came up on my Prime Reading monthly offerings.
The Jewish Mob went after the American Nazis with gusto, and were disappointed when they were told they couldn't kill anyone!
