Serious question. Seems to me parents that accepting wouldn't do something to intentionally hurt their child.

I'm always learning.

would have been happy to see my novel published. My dad had appeared in a newspaper story with his partner; and my mother had told me I should write a memoir about our family -- but all I did was write a novel with a made-up family.

I agree with those who say that Kai shouldn't have been publicly outed without his prior approval.

9. For anyone who wants their take on it, in the Bogerts' own words:

This happened back in 2014, when the world was a quite different for trans people. The Obergefell decision wouldn't be for another year, and with it, Republicans' pivot to attacking trans people. Adding attacking us as one of their primary culture war items to their party platform wouldn't happen until January of 2017. It ramped up quickly after that. Simply put, it didn't seem as dangerous then, and there was a more optimism for the future.

If a parent outed their kid now, I'd have a hard time agreeing with it unless the child was older, already out on social media & prepared for the inevitable backlash. I'd never condone deadnaming unless the trans person has specifically asked people to include their prior name.

Anyway, here's the aftermath in their own words, the mother's and son's, and how they felt about it:

What a wonderful mother and a great kid. Their story can make a difference for others out there going through similar journeys, and that's a lovely thing.

The piece is 8 or 9 years old and has stuck with me ever since. It's how I learned who Jon Ralston was. He has since become one of my favorite Journalist and political pundit. His post is linked below. Book mark it and read it when you have time. I guarantee you won't regret it. I wish all GLBT kids had the level of support and unconditional love that Maddie/Jake has.
