@SouthwestAir
flight 1630 (MCO to PHX).
She sat behind this man. She had been attending the Grace Hopper Conference all week and was resting her head on her tray table, trying to sleep a bit.
Let me tell you what happened.

Not blaming the OP. The Tweeter could have given a short synopsis.

(36,109 posts)and you get the twitter blow by blow thread of what this guy did that merits him being arrested for assault as a hate crime.
LisaM
(27,815 posts)Short version, she fell asleep with her head on a tray table and apparently bumped his seat in the back and he violently reclined his seat in an attempt to hurt her, which he did. He then proceeded to verbally harass her, called her racial slurs, and threatened to keep reclining his seat to spill her drink. All witnessed by her seatmates, who kept a written account. He was detained after the flight, but the jurisdiction was the FBI, not the police, because the incident occurred over international waters.

I can understand why the flight attendants didn't physically confront him. There has been an enormous uptick of violence against flight attendants lately. They did offer to move her, but it sounds as ultimately he was held accountable, so I am not sure what else there is to this story. It's very unfortunate.

inflicted on them by violent male passengers. Where is the airline industrys permanent no-fly list for this behavior?
LisaM
(27,815 posts)But let's hope this is his last flight for a while. It sounds as if it's in the FBI's hands at the moment.

(27,815 posts)I think it woke her up and then she had pain from it.

(21,594 posts)And the the FBI, SW airlines, nor police have done anything yet. The spreading of this is a way to get an investigation going.
This could happen to any of us and needs to be taken seriously

(189 posts)On another thread on DU this morning there was an essay about how SADISM is the new "cool" and that deriving pleasure and joy from the pain of others is absolutely the goal. Seems to be the the way of things at this point in time. This is a tragic new way of feeling powerful by being sadistic.

(45,463 posts)they have names of everyone on the flight and check photo IDs when issuing boarding passes. They chose not to have police arrest him upon landing.

that her head was on/against the tray table on the back of his seat when he reclined it? He definitely acted unruly afterwards, and the airline should punish him for that ("international incident" or not). But I suspect that they and the FBI are both dragging their feet because ultimately, the initial bumping was simply an accident that she had caused: tray tables are not headrests.
