(26,330 posts)My partner and I took Paxlovid around Labor Day.
Its a 5 day course twice a day. The only side effect we had was a slight bitter taste a couple hours after each dose.
Im thinking we would have had a mild case without the drugs. But who knows.
My buddy was sick as a dog for 2 or 3 weeks even after being fully vaccinated and boosted so we didnt want to take any chances.
You have to take the drugs within 5 days of symptom onset. My buddy decided to rough it and ended up crying uncle and begging for mercy at the ER two weeks in. All the ER doc could give him were some antibiotics.

(12,265 posts)It interacted with my meds so they gave me the alternative which is not as effective. I got covid twice in a month 4 vaccinations.

(26,330 posts)My partner takes Flonase and our doc told him to only take one treatment per day versus two. The pharmacist mentioned it as a potential problem too.
One of the drugs, ritonavir, in the Paxlovid cocktail is an HIV/protease inhibitor treatment thats been around since 1995 ish.
A friend of mine went on the HIV cocktail in 1996 and had a bad reaction to prescription strength cold medicine- I forget which one. I wonder if there is some reaction with the protease inhibitor and thats why my partner had to cut back on the Flonase.
My buddy got Covid about a week after us and our mutual friend doctor prescribed a different med he said was more effective. I forget the name.
Our doctor friend recommend we all take baby aspirin for a month as a stroke prophylactic (absent any bleeding history).

(2,824 posts)having attending a concert in KC, MO. I'm not sure I didn't have it before I left. For the last two weeks I have had a lingering cough and runny nose that has improved a lot since I began taking antihistamines this week. Have been reading that long Covid may be due to a hyper-immune reaction. It has sent my allergies into overdrive. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery!

(487 posts)Am fully vaxed and boosted. Have been careful and masking all this time. Decided to risk a trip to Europe. Felt fine the whole time. Friday evening I had a return layover at JFK en route to Minneapolis. The lines and crowds were horrendous. A sea of humanity.
Monday morning I felt poorly and tested positive. Got on paxlovid within hours. Feels like a bad cold but must isolate for 5 days at home, separate from husband. Could be worse.

(4,690 posts)Fortunately it wasn't too bad and only lasted a few days. It gave me the feeling that in some form it's here to stay, like the flu.

(1,824 posts)Worst flu ever - seriously. It rolled over me like a truck. I tested positive and got Paxlovid and am improving.
It started with some cold symptoms - since my husband had Covid I tested myself - tests came back negative twice. Then the fever, chills, wobbly legs hit and next day I tested positive. It's hard to get in front of this.
I'm on my last day of Paxlovid and still coughing and hacking, but was able to get on my exercycle for 25 minutes easy, and will go out for a walk (I live in on a quiet road) later - it's a bit smoky from fires but I'll be in an N95 mask. Not worried about staying in the house because I won't be coming across anyone, and have someone to go to the store for me so I'm not around anyone.
The bummer is, is that I'm self-employed and was unable to work for days.
I've only had the two shots and a booster and probably picked it up at a football game. I *had* been scheduled for the bivalent booster tomorrow but cancelled - I won't be out of quarantine in time.
Just pace yourself.

(231 posts)Like you I wear a mask everywhere. Didnt expect it to come to me in the body of my 8 year old GD. Came to visit Mawmaw Kat because we havent seen each other in person since June because I have a broken ankle. She didnt have symptoms until later that night and she was sick the next day so son did a test on her and positive. Told me on Sunday, by Monday I knew I had it.
Aldi Ive had 3 vaccine sticks. Was meaning to get the 4th then I got covid and then gave it to hubby.

(12,870 posts)... the day after my 65th birthday. I'm double vaxxed, double boosted, and in generally good health (haven't had so much as a bad cold in years).
For me Covid has been like a chest cold, coughing up phlegm but not feeling all that sick. My wife (3 years older) came down with it two days later. It hit her like the flu. Always active working in the house or garden, she barely had enough energy to walk from the bed to the couch. We both got Plaxovid Monday last week and had the 5-day course. My condition hasn't changed much, but thankfully she's feeling better.
GenThePerservering
(1,824 posts)That was like me - I'm also active, run half-marathons and have a pretty active job, and just getting around the house was a chore. I'd sit up for an hour and then have to lie down again.
I'm a bit older than your wife and am feeling much better, too, so I expect your wife will be back to her active life in no time.

(12,870 posts)Many people with moderate symptoms probably don't test or seek treatment.
Really sucks the vaccines don't provide immunity, though I suppose the symptoms would be worse without the shots.

(1,287 posts)He went to an SU game in the Dome and didnt wear a mask, then stayed over his brothers, who also went to the game and didnt wear a mask. They both tested positive on Wednesday. My SIL who was also at the game and didnt wear a mask has not tested positive, yet.
I was with my H unmasked at our home from Saturday night until he tested positive, The. The masks came on and he was banished to our finished basement. He was congested, had a tickle in his throat and had a slight fever Thursday morning, so he took Tylenol and it went away. Dr. prescribed Plaxovid but by then (Thursday afternoon) he felt much better, so didnt take it. He was congested for a few more days but is now fine - except he is still testing positive. Not surprised as most everyone we know has tested positive for 10-12 days.
I have not tested positive and I test everyday.
We were both newly boosted but only a week out when he got exposed. But, I think that is why his case has been so mild and I never got it (yet.) We are still isolating and wearing masks in common area of house, but arent ever in the same room at the same time.
We are supposed to go to Portland Maine so H coukd run the Marathon on Sunday, but even if he is negative in time he thinks its best no to tax his body so soon after Covid.
We will still go of he is negative by Friday and just do touristy things. And wear masks everywhere!
OP, Hope you have a mild case and feel better soon!
GenThePerservering
(1,824 posts)about 2-3 weeks after the plain old flu (and it wasn't all that bad of a flu, either) and about 11 miles in started getting dizzy, kept having to slow down to a walk, and at mile 19 my legs cramped up so badly I could barely even walk. I kinda minced in over the finish line (at last). It was not a great idea.
Raftergirl
(1,287 posts)Im glad my H thought about it all on his own without me suggesting it. That can sometimes backfire.
He is also 64, so he really needs to take it easy, even though he is in great shape. He runs at least 2 marathons a year and many half marathons and 10ks.
GenThePerservering
(1,824 posts)about the backfiring. I had to cancel a 10 miler I love to do.
My belief is that being as active as possible provides some resilience for recovery, and if one can possibly get outdoors while they're sick with it, even fora bit, in a safe way, the fresh air will also help.

(53,061 posts)Had a very slight dry cough for 6 weeks which is not uncommon in AZ in July when you have AC blowing on you 24/7.
Started getting worse but tested negative.
Fever 104 for 4 days, worsening cough confirmed it was slow developing COVID. No appetite, etc but as lungs got better prostate/urination became really painful.
Urgent care tested and found infection (generous sprinkling of red specs were an interesting addition).
Doctor had me stand and gave me a firm punch on my back which showed no kidney pain guessing my bladder is infected.
Doctor said "yeah that's what Covid does, create chaos all over the case"
Body is going to finish off the virus, antibiotics is going to take care of the infection.
Glad 2 vaccines and 2 boosters helped my body fight it.

(1,495 posts)I think you have to wear an N95 or equivalent now with these new strains. Or at least cord locks to tighten the earloops on KN95 or KF94 masks. Fit is very important to protect yourself. Make sure there are no leaks, especially around the nose.

(1,495 posts)At one time, I remember the CDC was recommending putting a cloth mask over a surgical mask if you didn't have access to better quality masks. Do you have any idea how you caught it? I have a seriously ill family member in the hospital now and it seems like half of the nurses and doctors are sick. One nurse told me that half the nurses on the floor called in sick with Covid today and she was being run ragged. I'm really trying to avoid this virus so I really hope my N95 holds up.

Sorry this is gross, but I have never had THAT much mucus in my whole life. Cough lingered for about six weeks but Texas allergies probably contributed to some of that.

If we (Chelsea, I was born and raised in west London) cannot finally pull in Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig for our left-footed left centre back, my 2nd preference is Evan Ndicka, from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Congrats on winning the UEFA Europa League last season as well!
