Just North of Homestead and just South of Miami.
Windy and lots of heavy rain but power is still on. We're outside of the direct threat.
Looks like, for once, the misery will be north of me.
Multiple tornado warnings and watches being issued.
Looks like this is going to be a long night for my neighbours to the north.
Stay safe guys.

My dad got stationed in Miami shortly after Kennedy was killed, and bought a house in the Kendall area, right up US 1 from Perrine and Goulds. My sister attended school in Goulds.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)The area where dad bought the house (off SW 87th and 112th) was called Holly Heights if I remember correctly, but Googling that returns no result as a place name.
Most of those areas of south Dade County retain addresses as Miami and not Kendall, Perrine or Goulds.
I dont think it changes until you get to Homestead.
Exceptions include the cities of Coral Gables and South Miami. Even Coconut Grove addresses are listed as Miami.
Its weird!

(8,678 posts)My sister was there and they took a direct hit. They were nearly killed. House and garage and their small farm was basically destroyed. This one may be similar for folks in Tampa area.

(3,622 posts)But...
Almost every tropical storm takes out the power at my place. I farm 5 acres and the power company hasn't seen the need to put me on the protected grid so every time we get a good blow the power line comes down.
Until then, I'll chill with a glass of wine. If/when the lights go out I'll go to bed...

(8,252 posts)a lot of rain. Not much wind, but a lot of rain, and in varying degrees of heaviness and lightness every few minutes.

(2,024 posts)I don't know if I've ever seen such a wide swath of 20 inches of rain as forecast from W Central Fl. all the way to J'ville. If this thing slows down as forecast it's yikes time. When major hurricanes get sheared from behind they tend to unload all of that moisture on the N and NW sides of the eyewall. Georgia and and South Carolina need to have their ears perked also. There's been a pretty stiff onshore wind up there for a few days and this thing could start tide piling along those coast lines along with upwards of 10 to 15 inches of rain up there as it waddles into the Appalachian foothills When it interacts with that chilly air up there the heavens could open up.
Stay safe, water is the killer.

(6,691 posts)Light steady breeze. We're projected to get the same rainfall totals as Tampa. Highest in the state, according to the weather channel website. The weakened eye should get close to us but just tropical storm strength. Never fun.

(3,622 posts)All you'll get is rain.
Worst part is losing power.
FPL aren't really good at getting it right.

(6,691 posts)Duke Energy also sucks. We have them now. Stockholders and upper management are all that matter. Standard corporate bs. This storm will test them all.

A Canadian crew finally showed up and fixed my line.

(6,691 posts)Five weeks is brutal. Might as well learn how to churn butter.
The latest track sort of mimics hurricane Charlie. One nasty ass experience. Unprepared in Longwood. Lessons taught and learned that week.

(3,622 posts)My mother and father set this farm up assuming there would be no help.
I came here after Dad passed away.
Living without grid power is a fact of life.
Fortunately as a farmer/grower I have a couple of wells and have the ability to generate power.
The hardest part is protecting property. The thieves are out in force as soon as the power goes down. It was ok when there was more one person awake at a time to stand watch.
Now I'll have to sleep during the day and stay awake at night.

It was that Carla episode with Dan Rather that made
me cautious for all time.
