Just woke to 40 mph winds after full day of heavy rain yesterday.
Safe and secure for now, but west coast conditions are going to be very bad soon.
Thoughts are with you all. Thoughts are with the people of Cuba, too.
Internet out. Using cellular data.

West coast - Marco Island to Tampa getting slammed.

(10,054 posts)We are currently okay here in SW Broward, at least from the hurricane. Our county had some tornadoes last night - hit the east side of Pembroke Pines and overturned small planes at Perry Airport. Some property damage in surrounding neighborhood but no injuries (I don't think). Worried more about folks on west coast.

because of spawned tornadoes during Katrina. She caused a lot of them - more than 50 I think. But they were mostly small EF1s and 2s.
I had always understood the wall of water/storm surge at the coast caused most of the fatalities. 30 people in one apartment complex.

(8,844 posts)and their shitty katrina Fema coverage didn't reveal much of what happened down there. Their in-action was un-fathomable in the history of our country. Last I heard there were still something like 1800 residents still missing in totally flooded out houses.....
Florida Trump humpers should count their blessings that Biden is in charge right now with the hurricane bearing down on them.....
If Trump/DeSantis were in charge, those two would go down and fly around the Tampa Area dropping rolls of paper towel....

Btw, I lived thru Hurricane Isabel in Hampton roads, Virginia in 2000. We had huge 65' trees on our property that came down. At least a 1/4th of our neighborhood had a tree through their roofs. We were very lucky.
GOOD LUCK to You!

(9,291 posts)My step-son and his mother decided to stay. Area D, off of Hillsborough Ave.
We offered them funds, if they wanted to go, but they think they will be safe.
Hope everyone is. Stressful few days.

(200 posts)I feel for everyone immediately south of me, apparently it's getting pretty bad.
I'm seeing lots of footage of the water being sucked out of Tampa bay, there's only mud. Apparently, the storm surge is going to be south of here also.

(3,689 posts)Still good but still a couple of hours to go before the worse. Luckily I have friends who have a very sturdy and hurricane proofed house. Looks like we get to see how well it works. Electricity is starting to get iffy. Stay safe out there.

(5,624 posts)We drove to Lakeland from Treasure Island yesterday noon and stayed in motel. But, this morning drove back to Treasure Island as Lakeland and Orlando are going to just be getting worse. Talk about trying to outsmart a hurricane. We are now back to our condo 3 blocks from the Gulf and unpacking. The wind here is 45-60 mph and it is raining but all will be OK. This entire odyssey took 24 hours. Not fun, but we are safe and not homeless. Feeling terrible about the folks to our south. We will make an attempt to help those people after the storm is passed.

After Irma passed through, our ancient MH in a park on an estuary by Tampa Bay had power restored in the middle of the second day. (!!!) We could never have expected it, but services had their ducks in a row ahead of time. The park was, amazingly, still there, so on the schedule and hook it up.
Things may be a bit slower this time with all that water... Best wishes, though.
