Danish queen strips four grandkids of royal titles to give them normal lives

.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe, Europe's only reigning queen and the continent's longest serving monarch, on Wednesday stripped four of her eight grandchildren of their titles, the palace announced.

The official reason was to allow the four children of her youngest son, Prince Joachim, to live more normal lives, and follows similar moves by other royal families in Europe to slim down their monarchies, the palace said.

"As of January 1, 2023, the descendants of His Royal Highness Prince Joachim will only be able to use their titles of Count and Countess of Monpezat, their previous titles of Prince and Princess of Denmark ceasing to exist", the royal palace wrote in a statement.

Sucks to be #5. Good thing there won't be any resentment.

The grandchildren are aged 23 to 10, so the youngest are old enough to know what's going on. Pre-teens and teens will feel this the most, and that seems to be who are being hit by this. Their identities are being pulled from them as they are entering early maturity.

There is no need for a huge and bloated monarchy in the modern age.

Hopefully King Charles will follow her lead. Archie and Lilibet do not need to be made prince and princess. They live in the US and Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals. George, Charlotte and Louis have titles because they are William's children and he is directly in line for the throne, but I would not expect anyone but George's children to receive titles one day when the time comes.

The children of Elizabeth's youngest son are not 'Princess' and 'Prince':

Upon both of their births, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex opted not to give their children prince and princess titles, although they can choose to receive the titles when they turn 18, according to the 1917 Letters Patent, which decrees that all children of the monarch's heirs have princely status and can use the designation His or Her Royal Highness.

"We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living," the Countess of Wessex told Times of London about their decision to not give Louise and James titles. "Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it's highly unlikely."

And Louise has turned 18 since that interview, and hasn't taken the HRH title. She still has the 'Lady' title, but that's like the Danish children getting a 'Count' title.

(And Princess Anne's two children never got any titles, but that was because the sexist rules when they were born said children of royal women didn't get royal titles.)
