The Chief Justice of Pennsylvania passed away. He’d been on the court since 2003.

Baer was part of the court’s 5-2 Dem majority. The governor appoints a successor, with Senate confirmation. (Right now, the gov is Dem; would the GOP Senate delay till election?)

The death of the Chief Justice of Pennsylvania comes just two weeks after the retirements of the chief justices of Illinois and Michigan, and a couple of months after the retirement of the Chief Justice in New York.
