Veteran aid bill passes house and senate by unanimous consent

There's more to this story than the title suggests.

The "Solid Start Act" was sponsored by a republican congressman in my neighboring district, rep Dave Joyce (R-Ohio). it was co-sponsored by Rep. Elissa Slotkin — a Democrat from Lansing, Michigan.

The bill is written to help vets during their first year after service. The VA will contact the veterans three times during that year to help them acclimate themselves back into society. This is important as many vets suffer issues that need resolved before they can continue on a well adjusted life. It should pass through both houses with full bipartisan support, right?

Wrong!

Republicans threatened to block the bill in the House with the overwhelming majority of them standing firm against it. Why would republicans not want a bill that helps vets get settled in during their first year out of the service, I hear you ask? This is why:

"...because of a provision stating the VA would provide “women veterans with information that is tailored to their specific health care and benefit needs.”

That's why. Really... In a year when republicans are facing the wrath of women from coast to coast and being compared to the Taliban.

"The provision means the VA could provide abortion services to female veterans in cases of rape, incest or if the life of the mother is jeopardized. About a month ago, the VA already said it would provide access to abortion counseling and to abortions in the instances listed."

The issue with republicans led Rep Elissa Slotkin, the democrat who co-sponsored the bill with Dave Joyce, to address the House in a floor speech Wednesday, the day before the vote, criticizing some Republicans for their “heartless, violent approach to women’s health.”

"She added: “If that’s what you want for veterans, shame on you. Shame on you.” and the bill “should be the most bipartisan issue in the world and you’re making it political.”
"Slotkin’s remarks were directed specifically to U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, a Republican from Murphysboro, Ill., and ranking minority member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, said Austin Cook, Slotkin’s spokesman. Bost ended up voting in favor of the bill."

"Slotkin defended the bill from partisan GOP attacks over language around women’s health,” Cook said. “After that speech, enough Republicans backed down from their threats to block the bill and voted for it.” Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill.

Well it sounds to me like republicans in The House were finally forced to dig deep and locate their cold hearts to help our vets. It's a miracle! 127 republicans who must be tired of their jobs still voted no.

even before this bill came up. "Use them up on the battlefield, and throw them away" has been their mantra, even while waving the flag and accusing Democrats of being "weak on defense"...

So the language of this bill which suggested support of reproductive rights to which women veterans, and every woman in America, are entitled to, only gave them an excuse to do what they have been doing habitually for 20+ years, voting against supporting our veterans....
