(12,306 posts)Also, apparently Russia's military have "misplaced" 1.5 million winter gear and this appears to be fact.

(4,357 posts)How ironic with winter approaching. The very thing that saved Russia more than once (the brutal winters) might greatly contribute to their defeat!

(4,357 posts)had a good communication system. It's likely outdated. Never updated due to rampant corruption in the Putin regime? They stole a lot from Russia and left the citizens with just enough to not revolt against their rule.

(47,184 posts)But I assumed by now they might have kicked it up a notch.
Sounds like the opposite, now they are going to Facebook.
Yes Russia is not really a country in the traditional sense, it is a mass of land ruled by mobsters.
(Credit to Rachel Maddow for that gem.)
Yes the Russia people were thrilled to have a roof over their heads and food.
So let Putin do his thing.

(7,350 posts)The advanced Russian tactical radios were designed to use cell phone towers for their encrypted comms. Fuess how well that works in a war zone.
For their more standard rf comms, many of the radios turned out to be inexpensive chine radios in a military shell. The vast majority of the funds wound up in the pockets of Putins buddies.
Irish_Dem
(47,184 posts)Ok, they didn't think that one through.
And their RF comms are pretend military equipment.
Yes I think it is graft and corruption.
But also the Russians are known for their meat grinder philosophy of war.
Just keep sending men into battle to be killed until the other side gives up.
Why bother with expensive equipment or complicated military strategy or tactics?

(7,350 posts)... it is "they like the smell of their own farts." It's not strictly a military phrase, but common. Implying, of course, that they convince themselves that their own lies are true.
This is the world that awaits us if Trumpism triumphs here.
And yeah, Russians seem to reply on the idea that Quantity has a Quality all it's own.... but that idiom has a terminal point. In modern combat, coordinated combined arms is deadly force multiplier. A relatively small force, well, equipped, well trained, and most importantly, COORDINATING can defeat a much larger force. Nothing is worse for morale of the troops in the field than feeling isolated and alone.

(47,184 posts)The problem is that Putin is ex-KGB to his core, and psy-ops war strategies have been very successful for him.
He is a psychopath who has bluffed, bullied, terrorized and murdered his way to success.
So he uses his typical strategies because he has no idea about military operations.
His generals are corrupt and incompetent, and his military really existed only on paper.
So he goes back to the ghost of Stalin for inspiration.
Exactly, we are looking at 21st century modern warfare vs 1941 warfare.
Putin has lost the war, now he is just fighting for dirt. And buying time.
He thinks he can terrorize Ukraine by raping, murdering, torturing civilians.
And freeze out Europe so they will lift sanctions and force Zelensky into surrendering.

(12,577 posts)Put it with a UKR military that was willing to learn from us and is 100% MOTIVATED & believes they can defeat the invaders and you see what we're seeing now.
If only Afghan government forces had just BELIEVED in themselves & wanted to keep control. They had more training & more equipment and were overrun by a bunch of ragtag idiots.

(7,637 posts)A ragtag bunch, like you said, in beat up vehicles of all types with comparatively crap arms whose biggest stick was IED's cobbled from old artillery shells.
The Afghan forces by comparison had first rate equipment (ours), training and logistics but they were just too afraid of those fanatics to really fight. All the Taliban had to do was drive into town and they caved.
Sad...

(33,345 posts)Ukraine will not take back all territory lost before the Winter sets in - but should be able to take everything North of the Dnipro River.
Then the question becomes what happens in the Spring - do the conscripts get thrown into a meat grinder of a new offensive, or do they try to create a defensible border? The Dnipro makes a logical dividing line.
