Russian lines breaking in the South, under intense pressure in the North

In the South:

AFU ‘Overwhelmed’ Russian Defences Near Kherson

Similar information appeared in the public pages of the occupiers. It notes that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are attacking from the Kryvyi Rih axis and pushing the enemy along the Novovorontsovka-Dudchany highway. Two battalions carry out the attack: infantry and tank battalions.

And a tweet with map showing the Russian collapse:

In the North:

Ukraine presses counteroffensive after Russian setback

Hours after Zelenskyy’s announcement, Ukrainian media shared an image of Ukrainian troops carrying the country’s yellow-and-blue flag in front of a statue marking the village of Torske, 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Lyman and within sight of the Russian-held Luhansk region. Shortly later, a video posted online showed one Ukrainian soldier saying that Kyiv’s forces had begun to target the city of Kreminna, just across the border in Luhansk. Outgoing artillery could be heard in the background. Russian military correspondents also acknowledged Ukrainian attacks targeting Kreminna.

And a tweet about Kreminna (this guy translates Russian communications about the war):

But I assumed by now they might have kicked it up a notch.
Sounds like the opposite, now they are going to Facebook.

Yes Russia is not really a country in the traditional sense, it is a mass of land ruled by mobsters.
(Credit to Rachel Maddow for that gem.)

Yes the Russia people were thrilled to have a roof over their heads and food.
So let Putin do his thing.

The “advanced” Russian tactical radios were designed to use cell phone towers for their encrypted comms. Fuess how well that works in a war zone.

For their more standard rf comms, many of the radios turned out to be inexpensive chine radios in a “military” shell. The vast majority of the funds wound up in the pockets of Putin’s buddies.

Ok, they didn't think that one through.

And their RF comms are pretend military equipment.

Yes I think it is graft and corruption.

But also the Russians are known for their meat grinder philosophy of war.
Just keep sending men into battle to be killed until the other side gives up.

Why bother with expensive equipment or complicated military strategy or tactics?

... it is "they like the smell of their own farts." It's not strictly a military phrase, but common. Implying, of course, that they convince themselves that their own lies are true.

This is the world that awaits us if Trumpism triumphs here.

And yeah, Russians seem to reply on the idea that Quantity has a Quality all it's own.... but that idiom has a terminal point. In modern combat, coordinated combined arms is deadly force multiplier. A relatively small force, well, equipped, well trained, and most importantly, COORDINATING can defeat a much larger force. Nothing is worse for morale of the troops in the field than feeling isolated and alone.

The problem is that Putin is ex-KGB to his core, and psy-ops war strategies have been very successful for him.

He is a psychopath who has bluffed, bullied, terrorized and murdered his way to success.
So he uses his typical strategies because he has no idea about military operations.

His generals are corrupt and incompetent, and his military really existed only on paper.

So he goes back to the ghost of Stalin for inspiration.

Exactly, we are looking at 21st century modern warfare vs 1941 warfare.

Putin has lost the war, now he is just fighting for dirt. And buying time.

He thinks he can terrorize Ukraine by raping, murdering, torturing civilians.

And freeze out Europe so they will lift sanctions and force Zelensky into surrendering.

Put it with a UKR military that was willing to learn from us and is 100% MOTIVATED & believes they can defeat the invaders and you see what we're seeing now.
If only Afghan government forces had just BELIEVED in themselves & wanted to keep control. They had more training & more equipment and were overrun by a bunch of ragtag idiots.

A ragtag bunch, like you said, in beat up vehicles of all types with comparatively crap arms whose biggest stick was IED's cobbled from old artillery shells.

The Afghan forces by comparison had first rate equipment (ours), training and logistics but they were just too afraid of those fanatics to really fight. All the Taliban had to do was drive into town and they caved.

Sad...

Ukraine will not take back all territory lost before the Winter sets in - but should be able to take everything North of the Dnipro River.

Then the question becomes what happens in the Spring - do the conscripts get thrown into a meat grinder of a new offensive, or do they try to create a defensible border? The Dnipro makes a logical dividing line.
